My girls

Finally have a minute to post my birth story: I went in for my 38+6 week MW appt on the morning of friday the 5th. She checked to see if there had been any cervical changes at my request - I was getting a little (ok, a lot) tired of being pregnant - and my mom had already been in town for almost two weeks, had to leave in another week. I was dilated to a 3, which she was able to 'stretch' to a 4 and I had a little bloody show, yay! She suggested some homeopathics to help induce labor and after a quick stop at a local shop, Mom and I went for a walk while my son was at school - it was an incredibly beautiful day in Seattle for March. After nap time I walked with mom and DS for about two blocks towards the park, then decided to go back home and rest a little more. By the time I got home, about 4:30pm I was having consistent contractions. I started timing them and they were about 5 minutes apart. I called my husband to let him know he should come home pretty soon and I packed up the rest of our things. DH came home around 5:30, poor guy had to ride his bike super fast and had crazy adrenaline by the time he arrived. Our friends came over to stay with DS and my mom, DH and I left for the hospital. We arrived about 6 and things progressed from there pretty easily. I had to have a hep-lock placed (hospital policy) and that was probably the worst part of the whole labor (I really hate needles), the nurse wasn't able to place it; but luckily my wonderful doula (and auntie) insisted the anesthesiologist try the third time around, and he was able to get it. Around 8pm the MW suggested she break my water to see if that would move things along a bit; but cautioned that things might get 'a lot more intense'. I thought things were pretty intense already and requested a small dose of fentenol (sp?) to help ride through the stronger contractions. The MW thought we had enough time for that, as it only lasts about an hour and I had some relief for a bit. Around 10:30 we moved into the OR, which was less pleasant of an area; but I cared a whole lot less than I thought I would - it was also much cooler which was very welcome - I was so very hot and dripping sweat. I began pushing around 11pm and at 11:26 Della Susan arrived at 6lb15oz and 20.5in. She has a head of dark hair and looks like her brother and dad (I think). I was ready to push again almost right away and at 11:48 (getting close to midnight - yikes) Greer Lucinda was born weighing 6lbs10oz and 20in. She has a little bit of fair peach fuzz and looks just like her very own self. Both girls scored high on the apgars and were able to start breast feeding right away. We are having some latch issues now; so I'm pumping a bit to supplement after every feed - but overall it has been a wonderful, exciting and a better than I had hoped experience. They even sleep pretty well. My son was the only one who thought we were having two girls... he always insisted that it was "two sisters" and he was right, oh the wisdom of a 2 year old. We are adjusting well and I am so happy not to be pregnant anymore. Thanks to all the momma's on this board who inspired me to feel grateful to carry my twins for so long, it was totally worth it!

Thanks for posting your birth story. I'm at 23 weeks and am looking for a doctor that might let me deliver without whisking me to the OR first. MWs aren't allowed to deliver twins in Maryland, and the two docs I've seen so far aren't that into natural births (I'm seeing a 3rd potential doc this week). However, it was good to hear that you didn't mind the OR as much as you'd thought, and the note about being cool will probably ring true for me as well, as I'm due in June/July.

Was it difficult to labor/deliver with a hep-lock? I'll probably have to have one of those as well, but am resisting it. I'm not scared of needles after countless meds and blood draws during infertility treatments, I just wonder if it was uncomfortable or hindered your concentration at times.

Thanks again for sharing your story. Good luck with the brand new babes.

Congrats!! I love that you didn't find out the genders!! We didn't, but I somehow wasn't surprised by two boys!! If I'd had two girls, I'd have passed out from the surprise. Lol.

Take care of yourself and your amazing babies!
