How on earth?!?

Do you get your LO into a back carry? I've been trying for 10 minutes to get him onto my back in the 1/2 tai that just arrived in today's mail. Luckily he seems to be enjoying his trip from my back onto the bed - he's made it about a dozen times so far.

I suggest watching lots of youtube videos!

not sure if you can do this with your sling, bu with my mei tai I tie the bottom around my waist like I am putting him in a front carry. I put babe in and put the straps under his arms and hold his upper body with the top straps. Then I scoot babe to the side a bit and with some jiggling and wiggling I slide him around to my back while in the sling. There is a video out there sorry don't have the link that demnstrates this. I like this because i don't have to do the over the shoulder throw, which scares me.

Not quite sure what a 1/2 tai is... with my mei tai and ergo, I lay the carrier out on the couch (or back seat of the car) place DS on the carrier, scooch down and fasten the waist strap and then pull up on the straps of the mei tai, stand up so DS is on my back and I am holding the straps, cross across my chest and tie under his bottom in the back. Hope this isn't confusing- it is super easy!

I do the santa toss or the hip scootch depending on which carrier I am using. all i can say is practice, practice, practice!! and get help from someone else the first few times.

Ok, I'm about as hopeless as anyone, so I cheat. I use SSCs most of the time now, and the easiest method I've found is to spread it out on the couch/bed/in the trunk of the car, and lie the baby down on top of it. Then I buckle the waist belt- which lifts his bottom into the right position. Next, I lean back and slide my arms into the shoulder straps. With a half buckle, just grab the upper straps and pull them to your shoulders. Sit upright again (it's kind of like doing a crunch with an extra 15-30 lbs on your back) tighten everything up (or tie the straps) and go.

How old?

With my 1yr old, whom I started wearing on my back fairly early on...
I fasten the waist part of the carrier, then put one strap over my shoulder. I sit babe on opposite hip, then scootch her around to my back, grabbing her leading foot with my hand behind me. Then hold her in place with that hand while I use the other hand to bring THAT shoulder strap up and in place.

I'm leaned over a good amount and probably stick my butt out, but whatever, lol.

(the above is my method for with a mei tai or SSC.)

1.I have my boy stand facing me (sitting/laying would work to)
2.I grab him under the arms with my pinky fingers up (arms crossed so my left hand is under his left arm)
3.lift him up and over my shoulder... lean forward as he settles so he can balance on my back
4.put my arms over his legs to support him then bring it (the mei tai) up and over him.
5.tie to finnish it off.

good luck

How big and how old is your LO? I had the hardest time getting my DS into a back carry, until he was old enough to really sit up on his own (about 7 months). Now I tie the waist straps, pick him up under the arms and just sort of *toss* him onto my back, and settle his little butt into the seat while pulling the straps up. It's still not the easiest thing, but worth having him back there.

I do the hip scooch. No worries if you spent 10 minutes trying to get it. It takes some time to figure out. My first couple times, I had to cheat and set her on the carrier on the couch. I recommend that for the first bit. Then, try squating on your bed or with someone spotting you so that if you do make a mistake, your babe will be fine. Now, I just get the carrier on my left shoulder (I'm right handed.), hold DD on my right hip, put her left leg in place, at least enough to grab tight with my left hand, lean forward as I move my right hand around her from her left side to her right side (there's a leap of faith there, but as your babe gets used to it, it'll get easier), and then pull her into place and secure the carrier.

ETA I just put her on my back and I realized that after I secure her left leg, I use my left hand to support her right side as I swing my right arm around.

Here a video w/ 3 different methods. My personal favorite is the Superman Toss. It's always reminded me of putting on a coat in elementary school for some reason.

The sound on the video is really low in my computer so you may want to turn it up.

Keep practicing. It took me several sessions over several days to feel at all comfortable with it.

Thank you ladies!

He's really fussy today, so I put him on my front for a little while, but couldn't really use my hands. So I unsnapped the waist and put him on the bed with the mai tei, then turned around and resnapped the belt with him on my back. Since he was already in position with the mai tei, it was so much easier. He happily spent about 20 minutes on my back while I got some housework done. YAH!! That's the entire reason I bought the MT. And he's much calmer now, too.
