Yesterday's News cat litter-how to use?

So we decided to try this litter b/c of the dust from clay litter, but I'm not quite sure how to use it.
So you place about 3 inches of the litter in the pan. We scoop out the feces, but how can I possibly remove the paper pellets that have been saturated w/urine? There is no way to separate it from the "clean litter". So I'm thinking that I have to dump out the whole thing after about a week. I do not like the smell of it and I don't want our cat to get offended by it. She has great litter box habits and I want to keep it that way. At least w/the clay it never ever smelled...we scooped every day--usually twice.

Your thoughts?

We were not happy at all with the Yesterday's News litter. We have switched to Swheat Scoop. It acts more like traditional litter and is more natural.

Yeah us too, we ended up using the rest of it for traction when nieghbor got stuck in ditch on ice.

I just went back to clumping litter, but am about to give the wheat stuff a whirl, my nieghbor uses it with her two cats and she's very pleased.

I used if for almost a year. I just scooped out what I could and left the rest. Since the wet stuff falls apart and clings together I was able to scoop it just fine.

It is meant to replace the clay litter...not clumping litter. If you want a clumping style I would recommend SWheat.

I use the wheat for 3 cats. The regular holds up well;no need to pay more for the better clumping wheat. Just make sure you keep the level high.It is hard to get out the clumps at the bottom of the plastic tote boxes!

I wrote to the company about using it for my chickens, and they sent me 4-6 $1 coupons.Write and get some coupons. Our feed store just started carrying the wheat litter, and it is cheaper than the pet store.

Another thing I like about the wheat is there is no perfume added to it.I got one clay alternative from the store, and it had a VERY strong pine scent. The cats never touched it. I had 3 tote boxes lined up.One wheat, one corn cob,and one that stinky pine.Wheat won. I know they say to put the clay over the new stuff, and then gradually decrease the clay.I just wanted the clay out of the house, and switched straight to the alternatives.

I did read that some people love using non-medicated chick starter feed as litter.Never tried it myself.

Chicken feed works great. Clumps and everything, doesn't stink, and is CHEAP. But it's made out of corn, and I can't seem to keep my corn-allergic dachshund out of the litterbox.

We use the PetCo version of Yesterday's News (YN is sold by Purina, which is owned by Nestle, which is why we don't buy that brand).

Anyway, the PetCo version has baking soda mixed in and that keeps the cat pee odor down a lot. I don't deal with the litter boxes, but I know my fiance cleans the poop out daily, as well as scooping out any really wet areas. I'm honestly not sure how often he completely empties out the box and refills it, but I don't think it's often. He just adds new litter every few days. He sprinkles loose BS in there sometimes as well.

We tried a ton of different litters before we settled on the paper pellets and it's definitely what works best for us and our fussy cats. We had awful smell issues with the wheat and corncob type litters in addition to dusty cat paw prints everywhere. Good luck...it can be frustrating trying to find a litter that suits all the cats and humans in the house!
