Google said it would quit adhering to Chinese web filtering policies after discovering it was targeted in a sophisticated cyber attack originating from China and that Gmail accounts belonging to Chinese human rights activists were routinely compromised.

I have to wonder what the implications will be. Will we see China close the doors? Will we see more countries do that?

A lot of people from China already use proxies to be able to access websites that are blocked.

While I think this would have been better done, what... 6 years ago (?) when Google originally decided to "help" China with their censorship, I'm glad this issue is coming to the forefront now.

According to the Washington Post, Sen. Richard Durbin (D-Ill.) is considering a bill that would require "Internet companies to take reasonable steps to protect human rights, or face civil and criminal liability."
I find this ridiculous. I don't understand how the US govt can consider holding "internet companies" to a higher standard then they hold themselves to be at all reasonable. Until the US govt is willing to "protect human rights" IN THIS VERY SAME SITUATION AND COUNTRY, how can they demand others to?

I agree TiredX2 - while I think its fantastic that google & company are taking these steps, finally, I am totally baffled by the US government's double standards on human rights:

China? Communist country w/ horrible human rights agenda... but we're OK with them.
Cuba? Communist country w/ human rights issues... and they are like, the devil.

So thats just my personal biggest pet-peeve issue...
