Fundal Height off?

Okay, I'm trying not to talk myself into freaking out, so reassure me

I'm 14 weeks and 4 days (confirmed by early u/s at 9 weeks, plus I pretty much knew date of conception). The top of my uterus is like an inch below my belly button. Isn't that a bit high?

Straight-up, I'm absolutely petrified of having twins. I'm not advanced maternal age, and we weren't using any fertility treatments, but I have the dreaded family history: my mother is a fraternal twin, and a female cousin on that side also has had fraternal twins. So I'm already naturally a bit freaked out that it's possible.

I'm with an OB practice, I did get my levels checked when they did a full blood panel at 9 weeks but they tend to not tell you anything unless there is a reason for concern.

Reasons why I am NOT having twins:
1) Only one baby in the 9-week ultrasound. The yolk sac and the baby were very clearly seen, they checked out my whole uterus. Bad thing: the baby stayed very still the entire time, so something COULD have been hiding behind it. Tell me how unlikely this is.

2) At that visit, OB also checked my uterus by internal/external palpation, and saw nothing unusual.

3) At my last visit (a week ago), he checked for the heartbeat with the doppler, and it took a minute or two to find it. The baby was kind of tucked down in my pelvic bone. I think if there were two heartbeats to find, that would have been obvious while he was looking around? Note: he didn't measure my uterus with the tape measure or feel for fundal height, he usually starts doing that at the next visit I think, as I remember from last time. This was kind of just a quick urine/bp/weight/doppler/how you feeling? visit.

4) I have a very short torso, so that could throw off fundal height (although last time I measured right on the whole time)? Could this being my second child throw off fundal height? Could all kinds of other things affect it?

Am I just working myself in a tizzy for no reason?

Help.

I wouldn't worry about it. My OB doesn't measure fundal height ever because it can cause some to worry. It sounds like you've got one healthy little baby in there!

Well there are a few things that can affect that height, like if your bladder is full, or you are (tmi) constipated. Mine has been up to my belly button for several weeks already, but does shift a bit depending on those things. Im absolutely certain theres only one in there (though with this amount of morning sickness thats really a shame!). And because you've had a baby before, you tend to get bigger faster the next time around. So take a deep breath and relax a little. It's pretty unlikely that they missed it with both blood and sono.

yeah... don't stress over fundal height. Mines different throughout the day but almost always measuring larger than the 15 weeks I am. But its not twins... despite that my doctor asks every time I go in that we are SURE there was only one on that ultrasound...

yes, there was only one! I specifically had the tech check for twins because I do have a high rate of fraternal twins in my family (all blood-related in such a way that would point to genetic hyperovulation)

My fundal height this time has been insanely random.

At 8weeks i could CLEARLY palpate well above the pubic bone. By 13 i was measuring more like 19, at 24 i was measuring (with tape) 29. Now i'm 30 and i'm measuring 33. There's only one in there and no-one has been worried/interested.

I'm worrying too Kelly! I'm 15 weeks and my fundus is also a bit below my belly button. My midwife said yes, I was measuring big, but she thought I would be bigger if it was twins. She thinks I'm just in the range of normal, especially for a third baby. I'm just waiting for the 20 week u/s to reassure myself! It's not likely, especially since they saw one at your 9 weeks u/s. My 9 week u/s looked like an elongated letter B, it's that double curve that has me flipping about twins!

*slowly exhales*

Thanks, guys. Exactly what I needed to hear. I guess since my body has already done it, it gets more all-over-the-place this time.

Mine has been measuring high since I've been able to feel it myself (about 12 weeks). I am now 22 wks, and it's still high in relation to my belly button, BUT pretty much right on when measuring in inches. So I think that for me it's just that I'm tiny and have a small torso---even tho my uterus is the "right" size for my due date, my fundus is way past my belly button just because of my body shape.

I don't think it's a cause for concern unless your hcp thinks there are other warning signs of gestational diabetes, multiples, or other issues that could cause you to measure large for dates.

I ran into the same thing w/ my third. I have irreg. cycles (pcos) and had a dating US at 9 weeks w/ just one embryo visualized. By 13-14 weeks I had a midwife appt and the midwife expressed concern about twins (fundal height was similar to yours). I mentioned having had the 9 week US and she said "well, it is easy for one to hide at that point. I was planning on doing an US at 18-20 weeks. She thought maybe we should consider checking sooner. I had an US at 15 weeks at the university hospital and they kinda joked that they haven't missed a twin in a long time. There was only one babe in there, and thankfully they visualized everything they would have looked for at 18-20 weeks, so I just cancelled the later US as I wasn't big on doing yet another.

I measured right on for the rest of the pregnancy starting maybe around 18-20 weeks.

Mine is and always has been high also - was 27 at 24 weeks and so on... My Ob was not at all concerned - I am only having one also... My Ob is also the type to never try to "guess" how big the baby is before it's born.
He said there are a variety of reasons for why one could measure big, and that especially if you have been all along, there is really no reason for concern.
