Can he really be gaining a pound per week?

DS is four weeks old, breastfed. For the last 2 weeks, he's been averaging one pound per week of weight gain. Is that really possible at his age? We're hoping I didn't just mess up the scale when weighing him (at the hospital -- fancy scale). He needs to be gaining well, so it's good news if it's true. I can't judge it myself, though he's definitely filling out in the face and fitting into his clothes better...

My ebf dd was born the day after your son and from week 2-3, she gained 13 ounces--so yes! She had only (LOL, "only") gained 7-8 ounces from 1 week to 2 weeks, so when she gained 13 over the following week, I was pretty surprised! I'm not sure how she's gained since then but I'll weigh her again on Thursday to see.

(BTW, great job!)

William did for quite some time.

The pedi's running joke was that I produced heavy cream.

Oh yes...definitely possible! My son was 7 lbs 7 oz when he was born and gained about a lb a week for about six or eight weeks and got to 20 lbs by 4 months. He was exclusively BF though my doctor asked a few times if I was supplementing with formula. My husband called my milk "rocket fuel"!

Oh yes, in fact breastfed babies on average put on weight pretty fast in the first few months. They also tend to slow down quite a bit when they approach a year, so be prepared for that possibility too. You're doing a good job mama!

My DD gained pretty rapidly the first month! She has averaged 1/2 pound a week, but there were a couple weeks that she gained nearly a pound. She has also gained 3 inches in her 8 weeks of life!
