pre-seasoned or not?

I'm putting a cast iron skillet on my birthday list. Obviously, it would be easier to get one that's pre-seasoned, but is there anything scary I need to know about what they use to season it? Also, I'm not sure where to find one to season myself. If pre-seasoned is scary, where do I get one that's not pre-seasoned? And how do I season it myself?

All of my cast iron is from Lodge, and I got all of mine pre-seasoned. However, I bought all of mine at once, and I didn't want to mess around with seasoning that many pieces. They sell both seasoned and non, and they tell you how they do it. They also have instructions for how to do it yourself.

Just be aware that "pre-seasoned" does not mean it's ready to go out of the box. It still needs further seasoning.

cristeen is correct. There is a thread going over in The Mindful Home about cooking with cast iron. It's current, so it's near the top.
