Book recommendations for explaining God to young children

I would ask at church, but I'm finding the children's program (in that the story time for the kids) lacking in many ways, particularly in how it's not really age appropriate, so a lot of it is sailing over the kids heads.

Anyhow, my 4 year old has been asking a lot of questions, and I've been doing my best to answer, but I'm getting stumped at explaining the intangible.

Anyhow, we're not conservative Christian by any means, so any book saying that these people or those people are going to hell or whatnot, is probably not for us.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

We loved the book Where is God?

We're Jewish, but this book is great for any denomination.

Thank you, the reviews are fantastic. We got a very good book called God's Dream from Desmond Tutu, again, very good for various faiths and beautifully illustrated. This looks to be up the same path, thank you again.

We started with this book: http://www.amazon.com/Story-Jesus-Pa...9400882&sr=1-1 It's very simplistic and could be used for younger children, but it's a good place to start. The same author also has the same type of books about Easter, Christmas, etc.

I picked this book up from the bargain bin and we love it! It is a thick book, but each page is a little story/lesson. We usually read about 4 pages per sitting and talk about it a bit. It has questions at the end of the page that help reiterate the theme of the page. It has really helped my 4yo grasp those abstract concepts. This book does talk about sin, which I have found really hard to broach with my kids, but I think it needs to be done to understand Jesus. But this book made it completely comfortable to talk about making good choices and asking for forgiveness when we don't.

Just wanted to say thanks for the further recommendations Grace and Granola. I just found out that our Canadian equivalent to amazon is having a sale online, so guess where I will be tomorrow.

I'm not a huge Deepak Chopra fan, but his daughter Mallika wrote a book called "100 Questions from my Child" that's quite good. She often touches upon God, religion, and spirituality; it's very inclusive and definitely appropriate I think for families of any religion that don't see their way as "the only way."

In God's Name, What Is God's Name?, and Because Nothing Looks Like God (all from Jewish Lights Press, but suitable for all backgrounds).
