Feeding ducks - Page 2

We feed the ducks! There is a park next to a lake here on post so we will pack a picnic, eat lunch, play on the play ground, take a nature walk and feed the ducks and geese. Corbin loves it and pretends he's feeding the ducks every time he sees one.

I know it sucks because it's a cheap, fun outing for families and kids...but it's just not a good idea.

I agree. We do feed the ducks, but never feed them bread. We buy large bags of duck food at the feed store. (an outing all by it'self) and we feed the ducks duck food. It's not very expensive and lasts for several trips to see the ducks.

We feed ducks at the local tourist farm, but we feed them bird seed, not bread. I don't worry about the ducks becoming "tame", because they're already living in a domestic situation, yk?

We've never had a bite. Two of my kids sometimes feed the ducks off their flat hand, and the ducks sometimes kind of whack their hands as they eat the seed...but both kids say it tickles. We stay as far back from the geese as we can. They're freaking aggressive.

There's a river down by my grandparent's house that always has geese and ducks and lots of people go there to feed them. We always did bread when we were little, but my grandma's niece bought a bag of cracked corn one time and we took all the little kids down there to feed them, and I actually think they (the ducks) liked the corn better. She said it was pretty cheap, too, and it was a HUGE bag. If I was going to feed them on a regular basis I'd keep a bag of corn in the car.

We would feed them, although around here, there aren't really any duck ponds that haven't been invaded by geese, and the geese scare me.

If you're worried about giving them white bread, you can buy them an appropriate food at a local Tractor Supply or Agway type of store.

Good idea about the corn. I wasnt thinking bread was harmful to them because I grew up feeding ducks bread. BTW we are not feeding them out of our hands, just tossing them the food but they do flock to us and stand right near us. One was on my foot! But there are no aggressive geese or swans, just the ducks and they seem friendly.
