Spelling software that TEACHES spelling?

Thread Starter
My older son (8.5yo) wants to go to school next year, and would be in 4th grade. His spelling is really behind. His reading is fine, but spelling is probably at a 1st to 2nd grade level. We are doing some curriculum work, but he responds really well to visual, computer based learning, so I thought I'd find some software for him.

Everything I find is just different versions of spelling tests, it doesn't sequentially teach spelling. I am looking for a spelling curriculum software, not just drills or test prep. Any ideas?

We just started dk's 'i love spelling'. it's really old and only works on our 'old' computer. I dont know if it's what you're looking for, but it seemed like it covers more ground than a lot of the other spelling software out there.

I know that this isn't spelling software, but Sequential Spelling does have a DVD option that you could use.

My ds is also very visual, and he really likes the program. We're only doing the paper/book route at the time. There is no test prep -- every day is a different test and it focuses and builds on word families. It's quick and simple - and not expensive. I'm very pleased with how effective it has been with ds.

Here's the link -- you can try the 1st 8 days for free:

I am using Click'n Spell for our 7 yo. I'm pretty sure there is a free demo at the Click'n Kids website for you to see how it works. You pay once for a lifetime subscription that is transferrable. You may also check and see if Homeschool Buyer's Coop has a current group buy for it.

Thanks Laundrycrisis

Are you happy with click n spell?

I saw that there is a 60 day trial period. We will start that when all of our vacationing is done at the end of August.

He really loved Headsprouts and I am finding he is holding the bar high for everything else. (He didn't like MasterReader) So I am happy with using a trial.

I really liked that there is no time limit and that I can transfer the subscription to my youngest.
