Nora's birth story

On Fri morning, I had some bloody show and I was very excited. Of course I looked it up and my birth book says, "some women will go into labor within 1-2 days, others will stay pg for 1-2 weeks" Ugh!! It crack sme up and humbles me that there is NO answer to ,"When will I have my baby" I love that there is some mystery left in life!

Anyway- I tried to stay mellow all day and not too hopeful since my last labor consisted of 5 days of prodromal labor before the real deal. I had a midwife appt anyway which I was glad about so I went in at 10:30. My bp was a bit high so she decided to sweep my membranes. My birth center has several midwives and there was one I had never had an appt with which troubled me. Guess who was on call? ANyway- she was in the office so she came out to meet me since my examining midwife thought I might be heading back in later that day. I was immediately relieved when i met her- she is older, mellow quiet- just my style. I was hoping it would be the midwife who caught my other 2 kids but that's ok.

As the day went on, my ctx felt different but not too strong or regular. I kept reminding myself that it could be just from the membrane sweep and not to get my hopes up. But I also had a deep feeling that this was the last day of my last pregnancy and I wanted to enjoy it and live in the moment.

After dinner, we decided to walk to the ice cream shop. I figured the lactose
overload might help get ctx going! LOL Several times during the walk I ahd to stop and lean to get through but the ctx were still so irregular.

Around 8, we were watching 30 rock on Hulu and I had to turn it off because laughing through ctx was so uncomfortable! I should have know then because with my last baby, it was laughter during a ctx that turned into tears that helped me realize the event was imminent.

The ctx were getting stronger and needing alot of coping help and I couldn't seem to time them- I was getting into another zone. I kept trying to get dh to go to sleep because I really thought it could be a while but when I started vocalizing, he knew it was getting closer than I thought. I finally called the midwife and she could tell by my voice, I needed to head in.

On our way out to the car, I leaned on the railing and my water broke!! Ok- I guess I was really in labor! I went in ,moving glacially, to get changed and I know dh was starting to freak! I also started laughing then because my neighbor across the street is really mainstream and I seem to fascinate her in my weirdness and I kept picturing her peaking out the window as I am moaning and my water breaks. For some reason- that cracked me up so much!

The ride was hell- homebirth would have been nice!

Got to the Birth Center- had few intense ones and then got into the tub. That helped alot but they were quickly progressing. I was soon in "the zone"

I was having alot of pain radiating down the front of my thighs which was interesting. The most intense ones were followed immediately by another one. I was trying to smile and I kept intoning,"It's oooookaaaay....goooood" I didn't want to fight against it by feeling negative. After about 40 minutes, I needed to shift position then after about 4 ctx got into a squat and felt a little pushy. WOW! I was amazed how fast. They wanted to get me out of the tub and that was tough but I got to bed and standing up, leaning over the bed, i "pushed" her out in less than 5 minutes! I put that in quotes because I really did nothing- my body pushed- it was an amazing and thrilling feeling!

She came out looking beautiful and we were jubilant! A girl!!!!

I had no tears, very little perineal discomfort.

it was wonderful and now she needs to nurse so I'll finish!!

Thanks for all the suppport this board has given me theoughout this pg- you ladies are great!!

Thanks for sharing - it's a lovely story! I'm glad to hear someone else say that laughing through contractions was horrible.

Awesome!! Thank you for sharing. I think it's funny how many of us who have already been through labour still didn't believe they were actually in labour this time around until they were basically in transition. Haha!
Love the name, by the way!

I know!!! It really is funny. I think i was so determined to labor mostly at home- then on the way i was thinking- "ok- i hope i don't have this baby in the car!!!" Also interesting is with this and my last labor- when i called the midwife, the ctx got regular-like- ok you are ready
