Nightmares in a 2 year old

My 2 year old has always been a challenging sleeper but has been doing great for the past 9 months or so--waking once per week and easily put back to sleep with a back rub.

For the past month off and on she has been waking 1-3 times per night screaming inconsolably. She is usually sitting up when I go in there and she won't be soothed unless I get her up, rock her and give her some water. I feel horrible about this because she is so miserable and so exhausted during the day because of these night wakings. I am also 7 months pregnant and suffering as well because of the interuptions in my sleep.

She still naps at daycare and is waking up with similar episodes there. I talk to her about it in the morning and she doesn't seem to remember although, she isn't super verbal yet so she is hard to understand.

Her life has stayed very much the same--no big changes--and her bedtime routine hasn't changed. Our nights are usually jam packed full of play and running around, we do a bath around 7pm, then 10 mins of Tinkerbell or Elmo, books, rocking and then bed. She used to be in bed with the lights out by 7:45 but these days she puts up such a fuss that is after 8:30 by the time the lights are out. So, she is just exhausted from that too, i think.

Help, I am really struggling at work because of this and am looking for suggestions. I have been told to stop with the 10mins of TV before bed but I think that really helps wind her down and I don't really want to stop that. Plus, we have been doing that for months, even before these nightmares started....

Thanks in advance.

That sounds more like night terror than nightmares. My almost 3yr son gets them too. I've noticed that there are a few things that can set them off, one is being over tired by the end of the day (having a super busy day or too much play before bed) another is if he gets too hot when he's sleeping (we've stopped putting him in footy pajamas, and make sure that he don't wear socks to bed) we have also moved his bath time to mornings or noons and that seemed to help get the number of night terrors down. Some people also say that changing a kids diet could help. I don't know a whole lot about night terrors but maybe do some research and see if that's what your little on is getting.
