How do we know if this cat is nursing kittens?

A feral cat has been hanging around my workplace for over a year. I cannot be the rescue person for this cat--long story (well, short story, no money *lol*). My boss is the perfect candidate and she seems to have finally warmed up to the cat. She really likes her and started talking about taking her home. The cat seemed bigger last month and definitely looked pregnant last week. My boss and I broke down and fed her, feeling sorry for her. Of course, the cat loved it and hasn't left since. My boss got a voucher from the spay clinic and has decided to give her a home.

BUT...the cat came in three days ago looking thin again. She must have had the kittens. There is no telling where they are, as the woods outside are huge. The thing is I am not sure whether they survived. She hangs out here practically all day. My boss felt her belly and said she doesn't feel anything much there. This cat has a SUPER furry belly, and the fur is dry around her nipples. She isn't damp at all, and her boobies are not very swollen.

How can we tell if there are living kittens? My boss wants to take her asap, but of course, doesn't want the kittens to be out there starving.

Well I cant tell you for sure how to KNOW if shes got kittens somewhere, but I do know that if she recently had kittens she would be with them almost 24/7 (especially in like the first 2 weeks) and you would probably be able to tell she had milk. With my cat (who only had 4 kittens) it was very obvious right from the start that she was nursing, you could feel the swollen areas around the nipples and the fur was matted down from the kittens...
Its possible the cat has rapidly lost weight from a parasite like worms tho...
