Your thoughts on the book Eating Animals

Hi everyone,

I just finished reading Eating animals and I am haunted by this book. I hope this is the appropriate thread to write about this...please move if neccessary. I just wanted to know who else has read this book and what have your thoughts been. I have immediately stopped eating meat, but I am having such bad nightmares and just feel so sick to my stomach about the animal welfare side of things. I know that economically, environmentally, and health wise not eating meat is a great idea, but the images of those poor animals haunts me everyday. Anyone else out there have the same experience?? I know others may have read similar books or have seen Food inc. so any thoughts on factory farming in general would be greatly appreciated.

Well, I have been vegan and an animal rights activist for a long time so I don't really have an objective opinion on the book.

That being said, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I really loved Foer's writing style and think that the way he presented the material is an excellent introduction for people that haven't been exposed to this sort of thing.

The truth is that 99% of animal agriculture and the food industry in general is guilty of treating the animals and environment horrendously. Food Inc. did a great job of portraying most of it. I'm going to avoid debating the subject of what I think people should be eating and where it should come from, but I will encourage everyone to thoroughly research the origins of everything they consume.

I also highly recommend checking out Farmsanctuary.org for more info on the matter and for some positive stories to put alongside the haunting stuff.
Oh, and check out Farm Sanctuary: Changing Hearts and Minds about Animals and Food by Gene Baur. It's a great book!

I'm a veg who hasn't read the book yet, but the silly Mothering "ad" at the top of your thread when I opened this was ribs being slow-cooked for Chili's. Interesting.
