Someday my kid will poop in the potty... right??

So, DS will be 4 in June. He has been diaperfree and pull-up free since at least November 2009. He is very good at making sure that he pees in the potty, and if he pees before going to sleep, he doesnt even have accidents during the night. But alas, the poop is going to kill me.
He pooped in the potty twice, when he was in part time daycare. I think it was he peer pressure environment, or something.
Now he is at home with DH and DD (2), and he will go stand in the corner to poop in his underwear. He hides, and if you try to approach him he will yell at you. He has ruined many pairs of underwear, and if we switch back to pullups he starts to pee in them too. But the biggest thing is that I AM SICK OF POOP.
He says that he doesn't want to poop in the potty, especially if it is going to be a big poop. In the past he said he was afraid, now he says he just doesn't want to. We've tried bribing him with his favorite candy, with a toy, with gum, with anything. No dice.
I know I shouldn't force him. I wonder if I should even comment, like I do, everytime he poops his pants, that he needs to poop in the potty. If I put him back in diapers I am sure it will offend him. I just don't know what to do but I am so so sick of poop everywhere.
Ideas?

hugs to you! that has got to be so frustrating!

Ds went through this for awhile and it was tough. What I did was handle it very matter of factly. "Oh, you pooped in your pants. I'll run the bath water, and you take your clothes off and dump the poop in the toilet."

I made him responsible for any mess that he made by having him clean it up as best he could. I never mentioned the potty, or showed any real emotion at all. Just, there's a mess that needs to be cleaned up.

If we happened to be out in public and he pooped his pants, we'd just go home immediately. "Oh, you pooped in your pants...we better go home to get cleaned up."

It took about a week for ds to realize that it was much easier to just poop in the toilet than have to clean up a mess and have a bath, etc...

Geez! That sounds rough, momma!

We had a diapers-til-pooping-in-potty arrangement. So dd wore dipes that we pulled down for her to pee in the potty for EVER, and then the first time she pooped in the potty it was like this giant party and marked our transition to panties. So she knew that poop in potty=panties and not til then. We never went back to dipes, and she never pooped in her panties after that unless she was sick. I think holding off on panties for so long even tho she was using the potty for pee really helped.

So I wouldn't blame you for going back to dipes, but I think that with an older kid, maybe the pp ^ suggestion above would work better than taking a step back to dipes again. Good luck! Wishing you poopy potty vibes!

Can you talk to him about asking for a pullup/diaper when he needs to poop?

My little guy just pee trained day/night, but still uses a diaper for poop. We've never used pullups, and he wears "big boy pants" all the time. When he needs to poop, he asks for a diaper, and I change him into one. He poops, we clean up, and put him back in "big boy pants". He turned 3 in Jan, and so far this is working well. No poop in underwear.
