11 wks - slight bleeding and mucous - a bit concerned UPDATE

I hope everything is OK, I don't recall having any bleeding with DS, except at the end when a MW stripped my membranes w/o asking.

Today at work I went to the bathroom and wiped, and noticed it was bleeding a bit and also looked mucousy. I'm not spotting on my pad but there is a tad bit of light brown on there, I think from the bleeding/usual discharge. No cramping, although last night had a weird slight ovary pain thing that shot down my leg (like it hit my sciatic nerve, that has happened before pg also). Spoke to nurse, she said to call if it gets to be period bleeding.

I know bleeding can happen, but what's with the mucous? Anything else i should be concerned about? I did not plan on having any ultrasounds this time but I will if I have to. I have PCOS, and am on Metformin to help prevent miscarriage.

I had three confirmations that I am pg, two pee tests and a blood test to check the hormone levels due to PCOS.

Thanks!

How scary! Unfortunately, bleeding in pregnancy is one of those things that can be totally normal, or can be a sign of a problem. The nurse said not to call unless it's period-heavy? And they think you are at greater risk of m/c? For me, whose had three losses, that would not have been enough reassurance. I needed to know for sure, and opted for an early u/s. Not that that changes anything, of course, so if you don't want an ultrasound, the only real option is to wait.

You'll be able to hear a heartbeat with doppler soon, maybe already, so that would be an option, but it would not rule out bleeding caused by something like placenta previa or a subchorinic hemorrhage. It's just anecdotal, but for me, spotting in pregnancy that was normal has just been spotting, it happened once, or a couple times in a day, and then never again. With my losses, it began as spotting and picked up frequency very quickly, and was full period-like flow within 24 hours. Best luck for a sticky baby!

This, mama. I agree with PP that I personally would not have been satisfied with the response you got from the nurse. If I were in your situation I would try and make clear how very concerned I was about the bleeding and mucus and underline the fact that I was at an increased risk for miscarriage, and if I did not get someone who was willing to at least take the time to take my concerns seriously, I would start looking for a different provider...or go to the ER. Speaking from personal experience, trust your intuition. If something feels wrong, listen mama, it's your body and you know what is right and what is not. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers and am sending ultra-sticky baby vibes your way!

Thanks, there hasn't been anything since the one time yesterday. It's almost like it was a bit of my plug.

Trouble is, I'm kind of in between providers. I haven't had any prenatals yet because I am looking for a HBMW. I can go to this clinic if I need to though although I don't really feel like getting chewed out again by them for not having any appointments (and ultrasounds, etc).

I don't necessarily feel as if anything is wrong, but I'll defintely see how I feel today and if anything else comes up.

In my experience, it is common to have different kinds of discharge in pregnancy. Mucous is not unusual. In addition, I had some light (brownish) spotting early in this pregnancy, around 12 wks or so, and it was nothing. I agree that spotting can mean lots of different things, and sometimes all you can do is wait and see, however nerve wracking that can be! Hang in there!

I had mucusy spotting at 16 weeks in my second pregnancy ( this one ). I went in to the Dr. and they said it was coming from my cervix and it was ok. Then I passed a clot the size of a quarter and went to the ER instead. I knew it was coming from my uterus. They checked everything and did ultrasounds. The baby was fine... they still don't know why I had bleeding (3 days of period like bleeding).

It's true what others say... bleeding can be nothing... or it can be a bad thing. I pray yours is nothing. Do you have any cramping? I had some... but nothing major.

Did you have intercourse recently?

Only you can decide how worried you are, so only you can decide if it's worth it to go to the clinic. I've had tons of discharge, of all varieties, so far, and also some spotting. The spotting was two weeks ago, ultrasound showed a baby with a normal heartrate, and it hasn't come back since. My last pregnancy, however, was over before it began, with a miscarriage that began in week four and ended in week six. It, too, started with spotting that rapidly became bleeding. Both that time and this time, though, it was bright red.

As a side not, if my only option was a clinic that was willing to chew me out, I would bring my husband or my mother or someone with me, and their only job would be to tell anyone that started down that path to lay off because it will only make me stress more.

I don't know what it is about healthcare providers, but I wish they could jack into our brains and understand the mindset when we think something might be happening with our babies. If they could just feel how desparate and dreadful it makes us feel, maybe they would keep their mouths shut about their (completely irrelevant) preferences and tell us what's going on with the baby.

Thanks all, it was a m/c (stopped growing at 6 wks), first (and hopefully last) time for me so it's kind of shocking and I'm not sure what to do so posted in loss section.

I'm sorry. My loss was a 6-week loss...also my first m/c. Four months later we conceived the baby I'm carrying (16 wks today). Best of luck to you, and best wishes for healing.

I'm so sorry Mama. The loss section is a good source of info and support, there is a what to expect sticky at the top I found to be very helpful during my loss.

I had slight bleeding Thanksgiving 2008 and 2 days later had a natural miscarriage. I was 8 weeks along. Took me another year but we are pregnant again now and I am 19 weeks. M/C is hard and it makes subsequent pregnancies scary but they can and do happen. Let yourself mourn and let yourself be scared because it's just hard hard not to.
