using these numbers, i guess we are decidedly broke as a joke

we feel great though ... we don't have debts which makes our being poor feel like wealth.

That's what I thought too. My neighborhood is full of teachers and cops with some small business people, engineers, and retired folks sprinkled in. I live in a pretty average cost of living place.

I also took the vehicle thing to mean that people had vehicles (plural) that cost $45,000 new total. Not that they necessarily bought them new or that they were worth that much now. I'm sure the MSRP new of the vehicles in my garage was more than $45,000. That's different than their current value is anywhere near that.

Hmm interesting information. If you don't seem to be struggling financially then you are middle class.
