question re: domperidone

Hi all,

Some of you may remember I posted about breastfeeding troubles a month ago, Well, I'm excited to say we have been exclusively bf for 5 wks with my ds and 3 wks with my dd, and have great weight gains, woohoo!

I started taking domparidone the wk before I was able to exclusively nurse my ds... I take a very small dose, 10 mg three times a day.

My question is, for those that needed this drugs help to get off supplements, did you have to keep taking it? If yes, how long?

I'm kind of scared to go off it, but I also would like to stop if I can.

Thoughts? Experiences?

Hi Rachel,

I also took domperidone while breastfeeding my daughter. She wasn't gaining and it was a last resort, we were using the SNS and my midwife suggested the dom. It worked RIGHT away.... I took it for two years until my dd weaned herself. I never could stop taking it... felt a big difference in supply right away every time I tried. I'm so glad it's working for you; that's fantastic!

My supply dwindled immediately when I got off the domperidone. I noticed a drop in supply if I missed a dose.

I'm in the same situation. I take 9 pills throughout the day. I just dropped one pill at night because I was getting engorged.

Other than that, I am scared to go off of them.

Sort or related...I'm taking Reglan currently to help with supply. It's helped some, but not quite enough to exclusively bf the twins. My midwife recommended it because she didn't think insurance woudl cover domperdine and both should act the same. Did anyone get insurance to cover domperdine? If not, what is the cost involved? Are there any side effects? TIA!

I took Dom because I'm a BFAR mom (and also a mom of twins!) I took a huuuuuge dose: 4x4/day. Dr. Jack Newman recommends up to 3x3/day, iirc.

I would not take Reglan if you tend toward depression because Reglan crosses the blood/brain barrier and can cause depression.

I bought my Dom overseas.

I also took 4x4 (160mg/day) as per Dr. Newman's personal recommendation to me. I was never able to achieve an adequate supply, so took it for 6+ months until I could not tolerate the side effects anymore (headache, bloating, constant hunger and weight gain). I may try a smaller dose this time, or none at all.

The recommended way to "wean" off dom (it is not addictive, but to ensure you don't drop in supply), is to lesson your dosage 1 pill at a time.

So, day 1, drop 1 pill out. Do this for several days and see how your supply maintains. If you start noticing a drop, then add it back in and wait a few more weeks.

I started taking it around 2 months with DS1. I tried about 5 months later, and had supply drops right away, I put the pill back in, and waited a few weeks. Next time it worked fine. I think it took me about 4-5 weeks to get off 9 pills.
