baby is sleeping alot

I'm a new Mama and I thought babies were up all the time. For the past night and day, she has been sleeping quite a bit. Should I be worried?

At first, it was sleep more during the day and then party time all night, but last night she slept for like 3 hrs at a time only waking for diaper and change and eating. Now she is asleep again and probably will be for another couple hours.
How do I know what's normal?

I'd say it's normal. Most babies do sleep a lot. Guthrie is usually only wide away for an hour or so mid-morning (right now, actually), and then a couple hours in the evening. At night he's been sleeping 2-3 hour stretches (which is awesome, after DS2 who woke up every hour until he was over 2).

As long as she's still nursing lots, and having lots of wet and poopy diapers, I'd say she's okay. But, obviously, if you are worried, give your mw or dr a call!

Thanx VegMomma.
Yep, she's eating, peeing and pooping. Sounds silly of me, but I always thought newborns slept like an hour at a time and was up screaming alot. Baby girl has been so pleasant to take care of. I find myself staring at her and waiting for her to wake up, so I can have some company.

Mine is 4 days old and sleeping near constantly. I'm trying to savor it as it becomes more challenging (IME with my other two kids anyway) once they "wake up" more. I loooooooove the sleepy newborn phase

Mine has been sleeping for 3 hour stretches, too. Actually, she slept from 2 to 7 a couple of nights ago! (Now, that was bliss...) She also doesn't scream a lot so far. Very peaceful--wakes up and fusses for milk, some quiet-alert time, then back to sleep.

Newborns will tend to sleep 16-18 hours out of the day.

Interesting. Thank you so much ladies. I'll just continue to use her sleep time to get things done and of course stare at her beautiful face too.

And don't forget to use some of that time to take naps yourself!!! Oh, naps ... how I wish I could take one right now ...

Ah yes, naps. Naps are a good thing. For some reason my mind goes a million places when trying to nap during the day. I'm a bad napper.

Enjoy it while it lasts! (or maybe it will be permanent?!)
Use this time to cuddle and relax.

I remember calling the midwife with my second because I was concerned she slept so much (5 hrs the first night). But within two weeks she was a normal, screaming newborn (that hated napping).

Being born must be a fairly awful experience, because it really seems to piss babies off.

I started keeping track of her awake and sleep times yesterday a bit after this post. She actually got up quite a bit later in the day and then slept most of the night. I woke her up at about 4am for a diaper change and feeding and then she went back down until about 730am.

DDDC, but wanted to add that dd #4 for me was such a sleepy baby. I truly thought it was a myth that newborns could sleep 22 hours a day...but she really did! Even now she sleeps more in the way of naps than her sisters did.
