whiter area on newly erupting front tooth

My 9.5 mo old son's top front tooth has been growing in for the past three weeks or so and there is about 1/16", maybe a little less, of it showing. It looks like there is a brighter white area on the very front part of it, which has me concerned.

He has his two bottom teeth, an incisor and part of his other front tooth that have come in so far and those look normal. I rub his teeth with a washcloth daily, though I have forgotten on occasion.

He is breastfed exclusively and has been getting some pureed food for the past 2.5 mo. though that has been hit or miss.

He also gets 1 ml of Polyvisol with iron in it daily.

I'm not sure if the whiter looking area is just an optical illusion since the tooth is not all the way in or if there is something weird going on.

He won't hold still to let me get a good long look at it and when I try when he is sleeping he wakes up...sigh.

My DD had this on 2 of her top 2 teeth as well - however, her white spots quickly were stained brown by the iron supplement we had to give her (she was very anemic). Our dentist has always said it's nothing to be too worried about - just that the tooth/teeth were slightly malformed. She ended up getting one of the two filled as it turned into a small cavity. The other one we haven't had any problems with.

My son has the same thing. His ped and dentist both said it was likely caused by a fever as the teeth formed.

They did discolor as he got older. Now they are loose and hopefully his permanent teeth don't have it too.

A fever? A fever you had while pregnant or your baby had when the tooth erupted?

I did find one dental website that talks about the baby teeth calcification in utero and the central incisors calcification begins around week 13-16. At that time, I felt so sick to my stomach, that I wasn't eating much, so perhaps my LO didn't get the proper nutrition. Scary to think of how that works. It's such a small thing, though I did (and do) take a bunch of vitamins and minerals and other supplements daily, including calcium.

Both my DH and I have lots of filled cavities from soft enamel. I hope our LO didn't inherit that.
