Glucose in urine

So I just finished my appointment with my midwife and I had glucose in my urine. Now I get to do the 1 hour glucose screen at my next apointment. How much of an indicator of GD is this? I have a STRONG family history of diabetes, with three aunts that had GD all insulin dependant. Anyone else with similar experience and all turn out well? How good is diet/exercise at controlling most cases of GD?

FYI- I had a terrible sugar heavy breakfast about 2 hours before appointment.

In any case no more sweets for me...

I had glucose in my urine at my last appointment, and my mw attributed it to the abnormally awful breakfast I ate (mcdonalds - yes, GASP, I know LOL). We had already done my GTT and know that I do not have anywhere close to a GD problem, so she figured it was just my horrible food for the morning.

I had this in both of my previous pregnancies and never developed GD. However, this time I was already showing glucose in my urine at my 9 week appointment. My 13 week dipstick was fine, however. My midwife wants me to start checking my sugars with a glucometer at 28 weeks. I have never done the GD test and most likely won't this time, either. My two older children were of average size at birth (7lbs10oz, 7lbs13oz) and didn't have any blood sugar issues. I did have two maternal aunts with type II diabetes.

Thank you ladies for your replies. I am normally very concoius of what I eat because of my strong family history of diabetes. I just need to get back on my normal low sugar diet and I'm sure all will be well.

Thanks again.

Re; Your question about diet and exercise controlling GD, that's pretty much the case for a majority of GD sufferers. Something like less than 10% need insulin. These days, a lot of docs use glyburide and metformin instead of insulin as well. (Had insulin-dependent GD through three pregnancies.. now officially type 2.) I do inject insulin at night... and honestly it's no big deal. The finger sticks hurt more. The problem is, it pretty much opts you out of using a midwife, which sucks.

Even if you fail your one hour, it doesn't mean that you have GD. Seems to be a high false positive, IMHO. Eat a high fat, high protein breakfast before going in. If you can walk while you're waiting... do so. If you're truly GD, especially insulin-dependent, none of those things will matter. You'll still end up positive.
