History Odyssey without SOTW?

Has anyone used History Odyssey Ancients Level 1 without using Story of the World? I haven't used HO yet, but plan to purchase it for next year. I did however check SOTW vol. 1 out from our library a while ago. My kids did not enjoy it. I'm not sure why. I've thought that maybe they would like it better if I get the audio version of it, but idk. I don't mind buying it for $30 if we'd actually use it, but worry they won't like it and we won't end up using it! I'm wondering if anyone else has enjoyed using History Odyssey without SOTW. I'm already planning on buying The Usborne Internet Linked Encyclopedia of World History and already have the History Pockets.

Also did you purchase the two coloring books recommended, Life in Ancient Greece and Life in Ancient Rome? Did you end up using them? Did your student enjoy them? I'm wavering between buying them and not. They're not much at around $3 a piece, but every dollar really counts to us. I see they have information to be read along with the picture to color. I'm thinking my ds would definitely not want to color them, and dd *might* want to color a few. The text that goes along with the pictures, couldn't we gain just as much from the UILEWH and the reading suggestions from HO?

You can work it without Story of the World. Mine did not love SOTW Ancients, either. I increased the supplemental reading instead. They are enjoying SOTW Middle Ages this year.

We read very little from SOTW - my personal feeling is that you don't need to own it. And if your kids didn't like the book, I'm not sure how much better the CD is. Our library has a very nice collection of Ancient History books, and we picked up a few of the recommended books as we needed them.

The only book that we did wind up purchasing after the fact was "Ancient Egyptians and Their Neighbors," because so many of the projects came from that book I grew tired of trying to keep getting it from the library when we needed it. IMO, that book, along with the History Pocket and the Usborne Encyclopedia, is the only one really worth owning. The rest you can borrow. You could even print out sheets for your dc's to color, and then you wouldn't even need to buy the coloring books. I never saw them, so I don't know.
