When to test night time without diapers?

If DS is wearing a diaper, he's going to use it (even if that means sitting in a pee soaked diaper all. night. long). He's been completely diaper free and accident free during the day for almost a month, but he still wears one at night. When he naps he stays dry even when he's in underwear (once for almost 2 hours!). Are there any tricks for testing readiness? Any good ways of catching pee during a diaper free night?

My dd is 3 and has been completely out of diapers during the day for a year. She is still a heavy night-wetter. I'm not even interested in trying to go without. I already have to get up to change her sometimes or deal with wet bedding if her diaper leaks. I have a 6 month old who gets me up enough in the night that I am always tired, and I do NOT want to be getting up with dd crying in a wet bed at night. She sleeps heavily, and I don't think she would get up to pee.

I will be interested to see what other people say about their experiences. You could always just try it, if you're up for it. Maybe talk to him about it for a few days; tell him about trying no night diaper and that he needs to get up and go pee or call you if he wakes up and has to pee. Help him to internalize the idea that his body will let him know and that he has to wake up and get up to go to the toilet. He might just do it.

I was waiting for ds to wake up with dry diapers until I realised that wasn't going to happen. Like you said, it's not about control, if they're wearing a diaper they are going to use it. Ds was never bothered by a wet diaper. Then suddenly he decided he didn't want to wear them at night anymore and that was that. He's had only 1 bed wetting incident in about 2 months. So if your ds is willing to give it a try he might surprise you.

For us, DS1 was waking up from most nights dry, so we just started letting him sleep in underwear. That said, years of puppy potty training told us to make it easy on ourselves. Have extra bedding nearby. If you can, get some large absorbent pads to keep under his sheets (like the hospitals have-try a larger pharmacy, or home care store), secure with adhesive velcro if need be. Otherwise, we lined with a bunch of towels and a sheet of plastic and a blanket under his topsheet, so we could just strip in the night. We also had those supplies at hand to replace quickly.
