Communal living?

Any of you live in a commune or some other type of shared living community? How did you make the choice? Did you have children already? How did they adjust? How did you find the community that you are part of?

BUMPING...
because I am interested in other peoples experiences as well. We have been looking at 3 families and considering buying a three family house with two others who I have known since 1st grade (we have all known DH since 3rd). Since we all have hardly any family near, we would like to create a living space that is supportive and communal for growing families.
