Pretend Play Dress Up: Ideas & Where to Buy

I'm thinking of making a dress up trunk with dress up clothes for my daughter for her 2nd birthday and was hoping for some ideas for professions and items to fill it with.

We're not into princessy things so I'd like to refrain from the princess dress up items. I was thinking of putting in a few of my shirts and hats from the wardrobe from my husband and myself.

Do you have any suggestions for professions, clothes and other items to add? Also, any ideas on where I could purchase costumes, clothing for her trunk?

Thanks in advance.

When my brother and I were little, my mom made us up a dress-up box full of funky stuff she'd find at thrift shops and yard sales. It probably cost her about $10 all told and there was a ton of it. I remember playing with that stuff more than I remember playing with pretty much any of my toys.

Don't forget to check out Etsy. You'll be sure to find lots of goodies there.

I would suggest thrift stores. Its cheap, theres variety and if you are able to sew you can alter stuff and what not.

My favorite thrift store find ever was a pair of kid cowboy boots and a big red cowboy hat. Cheap. My oldest was about four at the time. Oh did those get worn. I think he is still sad that he outgrew them and he is nine now!

Garage sales, estate sales, Goodwill, thrift stores, etc. will provide a ton of options for an awesome dress up box. Also ask neighbors or relatives for castoffs.

i would add some playsilks to the kit. My daycare kids use them for EVERYTHING! They are a fun way to add to other costumes or to be costumes on their own. A toy garden has a good price for them or buy them at Dharma Trading and kool-aid dye your own for cheaper!

My toddler is really into pretending to be different animals. She received the animal masks and capes from Hearthsong as a gift and really loves them.
