Weight gain and ssri's

Hi all,

I have been on Lexapro, Buspar and Trazodone for about a year now. I have one son and have previously lost all of my pregnancy weight. However, I have gained back a tremendous amount, 35 pounds!!! I am wondering if this is something to do with the medications. I recently joined the gym(two days ago) and I am going to continue going but I am just concerned that it may be slowing down my metabolism. I am going to get a second opinion from another psychiatrist but I thought I'd see what everyone has to say

If you haven't really changed your lifestyle, then I'd bet money it's the medication. I have not escaped my Celexa use unscathed, either. I know it's a hard mindset to embrace, but really try to focus on being healthy instead of just focusing on the weight. If you're eating fairly healthy, exercising fairly regularly, all the while handling whatever mental health issues you are facing, then I say f#@% the weight, you're a beautiful person for treating yourself the way you deserve to be treated.

I've been on a low dose of fluoxetine (prozac) since Nov and haven't gained. But if that is the biggest change, then like the PP says, that is probably what it is. I think these drugs can have very individual effects upon our bodies.

Do what makes you feel good about yourself. Go to the gym and live a healthy lifestyle, but see the weight as only one facet of the healthy lifestyle.

I also gained 20lbs while on Lexapro--- BUT, at the same time, I had my thyroid levels checked and it turns out I have hypothyroidism.

I stopped taking Lexapro (changed to Wellbutrin, which helps you lose weight) at the same time I started Synthroid. I lost 20 lbs in three months. So, I don't really know what the cause was, but I am happy that I am back to my normal weight with zero effort.

You may want to get your thyroid levels checked, just in case.
