Kombucha starter?

Thread Starter
I am thinking about making kombucha tea, but none of the instructions I can find tell me where to get the starter... other than "get it from a friend". Well, none of my friends have ever heard of the stuff, so getting starter there isn't going to happen.

I'm in Toronto, Ontario if that narrows it down

Thanks!

It's really easy to grow your own starter/SCOBY from a bottle of raw kombucha that you buy from the store.

Do you know of Canadian, specifically Toronto stores that carry them, because I can't find any.

Do you have more information on how to grow your own and what scoby is?

If you end up finding a bottle of kombucha--this thread can help you with the details of how to grow it: http://www.mothering.com/discussions...=growing+scoby

ETA: just tried to PM you but it looks like your mailbox is full. If you can't find kombucha locally to grow a scoby--PM me as I may have another option for you.

I typed "toronto kombucha" into google and this came up with some suggestions, but perhaps they've been a dead end?

There were a few other hits with sources too, including a mushroom farmer, Mycosource, who seems to be at a few farmer's markets in the city.

Strange - I emptied my whole pm box to 0 and it still says it's full.

Thanks for the link, I'll look through it!!

I got mine on eBay. It came back to life in spite of being in transit for a week. I paid 5 dollars for the scoby and 5 dollars for shipping.

Check your sent items folder. Those darn things count too. That got me awhile back--couldn't figure out how my box was full
