that is fantastic. i think my dd (16 mo) is headed that way too. She is so rough n tumble, but she loves necklaces and schparklies, and she's started to have preferences for clothes and shoes. Can't wait for tutus and hiking boots!

I agree. I like what I see when I look at the Kid Girl sections of Gymboree, GAP Kids and Lands End. Now, my son just crossed over from the toddler/preschool boy sections of Baby Gap and Gymboree. And I'm having a hard time finding stuff that's still little boy but good quality (I resell at the beginning of each season.)

Lately I am loving Janie and Jack for my 3 yo DS. So cute and classic. Mainly I've been buying from BST on GF's and have found some good deals.

My favorite outfit ds ever wore was a pair of pjs that were grey fatigues. Over top, fairy wings, a rainbow grass skirt, black socks and sandals.

Im way OT but my DS went from an 8slim last spring to a 12husky this spring.... talk about confusing And he's not really 'husky' he just has really really short legs right now ugh....

Its like his entire body shape has changed over the past year.... nothing fits him correctly, short italian legs LOL and I just ordered a bunch of shorts for him, thsi probably guarentees a huge growth spurt in the next 2 months and I will have to get a 2nd summer set of clothes . We live in AZ and need summer clothes NOW.

Amy, I wish I could have seen that!

I can understand being sad about them growing, but style-wise, I was really excited when my daughter (and son, now) could fit into the bigger sizes . . . for my daughter, it meant being able to buy cuter stuff (a la Justice & P.S. by Aero) and for my son, pretty much the same, though he can't quite fit into those stores yet).

Thinking about Justice has the opposite effect for me.

Me too, Polliwog.

We do the tomboy princess a bit, too, and we just use dresses with leggings, all from garage sales, hand me downs, or target. I do sew, so sometimes I take two oversized tees and make a dress, too. I like that many are from the girls section b/c they're less limited. DD likes goth stuff a lot so I can work that in. And the garage sales help with finding gymboree fairies and flowers and nice stuff, even in the wrong size, and I just rework it for DD. Better than the same old flowers and kitties and "I'm cute" stuff in the baby section.

DD has worn some 3T pants (capris over cloth dipes) since she was one, and now often needs bigger sizes. Except when she's wearing dresses for one year olds she's worn forever, too

Wow. Suddenly I`m glad we have the sizingsystem we have here in Norway.
Sounds really confusing with all the different sizes! Here we have one standard sizing. It`s just plain centimeters. 1 YO is 80, 2 is 92 etc. For each year they put on 6 centimeters on the clothes. Not all kids will fit in the size for their age, ofcourse. But if you know your kids height, you will easily find the size you need. Oooh, and we also have the same system, but with a D behind in some stores. That means the lenght is according to centimeters, but the clothes have more room, for children who are a little heavier than "the norm".

Ok, totally OT. Sorry.

it goes both ways!!! try finding size 2 for a child that is not in diaper---we buy most off of ebay (older stuff)a size 2 from 10 years ago is so different from a size 2 now- even with shipping I still save tons and find like-new items

I despise the girls' clothing, too. And the shoes.

WHY can I not find shoes that are not covered in sparkles and bling and grafetti? I could not find a SINGLE pair of PLAIN WHITE tennis shoes...and I went to SEVEN shoe stores yesterday. And WHY can I not find a pair of sandals for the beach that are more than a piece of plastic with a strap through the toe? Can we head a little in the direction of "proper foot development?" And maybe, leather?

I had to start crossing the aisle when dd was 3.5 to 4yo. It makes me so mad that all the little girls are supposed to look like, well, like...I can't even say it. Arg. And I see that the bigger she gets, the worse it will be.

You know, grown women wear that stuff to attract male attention in a very base way. I do NOT want my small child stirring up those emotions in adult men. Seriously. Why dress her like that?

There are lots of brands that keep little girls looking like little girls. Gymboree, GAP, Lands End and Hanna are four examples but there are many more.

Target has really nice shoes for little girls.

I just saw plain white tennis shoes-- at Target, I think? They also had decent sandals for toddler sized feet. Also, Buster Brown makes nice sandals that are sturdy, and look comfy. I am thinking about springing for Keens for at least my 3 boys - b/c I know they will be passed down and/or sold later on. I bought a pair for myself and they are insanely comfy and sturdy.

There are tons of nice summery shoes and sandals out there - even more if you shop online.

And ditto what Polliwog has said in each response. There is plenty of little girl clothing to be found, and it doesn't have to be all pink, glittery, or overly "girly" if that's not what you and your little one prefer.

For what it's worth, I was at a Stride Rite outlet store on Sunday, and had no trouble finding plain, ordinary, well-made shoes there. They had plain white sneakers, as well as blue sneakers, in addition to pink sneakers. They also had supportive water sandals and decent-looking leather dress shoes.

Thanks for the suggestions. Our target doesn't have much, and shopping here is pretty minimal. I know I said I went to 7 shoe stores...I went to 7 places that have shoes. I think Belk, in the mall, also has shoes, but they don't have many and they are all over-priced.

We don't have a Stride Rite, or a Buster Brown's, though a few stores carry a few of their selections. I'll try online.

As far as the regular clothes, I have found things online for her before, but, I'm telling you, they are few and far between in the stores here. We shopped hard and I found enough to get us through the season, and I'll sew some, but non-trashy is pretty hard to come by, at least in my neck of the woods.

I really appreciate the tips! I was feeling so frustrated after yesterday's adventure!

Just1more - I know what it's like to not have many local options. The only stores that sell clothing and shoes in my city are walmart, target, and kmart -- unless I want to drive 30-45 minutes into the bigger city. 99% of my kid clothes shopping (which, I have an addiction to, BTW ) is done online. Most retailers have good return policies - so even if you have to order two sizes of something and return one, it's worth it. Plus the benefit of online coupon codes and sales, reviews on quality, and models wearing the items to give you a better idea.

Sometimes you can get lucky with age-appropriate Tshirts made by Carter's, even up to size 5. They are always on sale the two or three times I find myself at a Kohl's. We have been super lucky getting hand-me-downs from a like-minded mama, and so haven't had to struggle as much to find suitable clothing (her daughter is even rougher on clothes than mine is!), but whenever I find myself in a clothing store, I am horrified by the commercial characters all over clothes, even underwear. And the sizing is always a mystery to us too!
