Breastfeeding Book as a Baby Shower Gift

Hello, I have a young cousin that I don't know very well that is expecting her first baby in a few weeks. My Aunt says she plans to breastfeed and I noticed her registry has a breast pump, milk storage bags, nursing cover and a bobby. Most of my relatives have formula fed, so I am not sure how much support she will get. I do know her doctor has told her that breastfeeding is healthiest for her baby & that's why she is choosing to breastfeed. I am still breastfeeding our 24 month old and really want to encourage her to breastfeed for as long as possible. Like I said, I haven't seen her in years, but would love to mail her a shower gift and I was thinking a breastfeeding book would be great. I love the "Womaly Art of Breastfeeding", but was wondering if anyone else can recommend an easy to read book. I think she does plan on pumping and bottle feeding as well so a book that includes info on that would be good. Thanks

I think that's a lovely gift! I enjoyed that book, myself.

You could include a little card saying something about how she can always give you a call if she needs support - it might be really nice for her to know that someone in her family actively supports her intentions, and is available for advice.

Have you seen "So that's what they're for"? It is a great book - light hearted with good info.

I love Ina May Gaskin's Guide to Breastfeeding. It's very easy to read and has great stories/advice/etc.

It's beautiful, and really inspired me to BF and not give up when things were tough.

"Breastfeeding Made Simple: Seven Natural Laws for Nursing Mothers" by Nancy Mohrbacher and Kathleen Kendall-Tacket is a wonderful, easy to read book for new moms. It has wonderful pictures of latching, and is just over-all a really wonderful book. Another idea would be the Baby Book by Dr. Sears which is a complete baby care book with lots of good info on breastfeeding and attachment parenting.
The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding is a wonderful book also, but I would recommend waiting if you are going to buy that one, as the brand new, totally revised edition will be coming out in the summer.

i like dr jack newman's guide to breastfeeding myself. i LOVE his website (so helpful... i fixed a problem we'd been having that 3 LCs missed just by watching the videos he posted) and the book is great... no nonsense, very easy to read.

SliverFish-is the Dr Jack Newman book "The ultimate breastfeeding book of answers : the most comprehensive problem-solving guide to breastfeeding from the foremost expert in North America" the one you are talking about? If so, I have read it & it's great. Has he written any other books?

This is the one I give for baby showers and it's been a hit. One person I gave it to passed it on to another person I know so I didn't need to get her one

Thanks SilverFish, I borrowed that book from a friend & it is a good one.

I think I will buy a couple of copies of "So that's What They're For". I see you can get it pretty cheap on ebay. I read some reviews and it does sound like a great book. I'll give one to my cousin as a gift and keep one for my library. I'll pass my copy down to my sister when she & her new DH have a baby

Thanks again everyone!

This is my 'go to' book for baby showers. Ms. Tamaro does an excellent job keeping bfing both factual and light-hearted and I find that first time moms especially really seem to like the format.

The only thing I added to it when I gave it as a shower gift was Jack Newman's info on breastfeeding and alcohol consumption. The Mama I gave it to likes a glass of wine with a meal, and I didn't want her to feel that she had to 'pump and dump' or wean early to enjoy wine again. She confided in me later that Newman's info really helped, and she breastfed for much longer than she would have done if she hadn't known that she could safely sip some wine and nurse at the same time.

Also, why don't you grab her a tube of lanolin? I agree that it would be really nice to include a note congratulating her for breastfeeding and letting her know you'd be happy for her to call if she has any questions.

My absolute favorite- and I read about 20- was Bestfeeding. 2nd best is LLLI's Womanly art of breastfeeding. (nak)
