I have a very good friend who is CLUELESS about children. She and her fiance started dating in Dec. and are getting married in less than one month. And now she is TTC. There's no chance of changing her mind so that's not even an option.
There's so much that's going to be changing and she doesn't have a clue. I need some book recommendations about pregnancy and baby care to help gently ease her into becoming knowledgable. I'm also thinking something about how it's important to come together as a couple and make important decisions before the baby is here. This is also her very first relationship so that complicates things even more because obviously there's going to be a HUGE adjustment going on. The other thing is that she is VERY, VERY strongly influenced by her mother (even though she's 32) and has a very hard time going against ANYTHING her mother says. Her mom orchestrated this relationship to get my friend to move back to the same town just five months after she moved away. She also orchestrated the wedding and the TTC so I think it's safe to say she holds a lot of power. lol And her parenting ideas are very mainstream and tough. My friend is a wonderful person but she often just goes along with whatever seems nicest/path of least resistance at the moment. So I think she just needs to start educating herself now so she can feel like she has two feet to stand on when it matters most.
My own ds is 7 and I do have a few I remember reading, I'd like some other recs too to add to the list. She is an avid reader so I think she'd be willing to read anything but obviously not something boring and dry. I've already warned her against Babywise and the like and she was open minded about that.
So what great and empowering books did you read? What else should I recommend against? I work in early childhood and spend a lot of time educating parents about Brain Development and the like so she's placing some trust in me because of that and I really want to help.
