Just how adamant is it okay to be among strangers about the TCAC? Social networking...

I never really knew how much of an anti-circ advocate I was until someone posted some ridiculous comment on a social networking site. Between women saying: The dad insisted... I don't have a penis, it's not my problem... It's like removing extra fingers... No worse than a woman getting a boob job... That was the WTF?!-moment that flipped my lid. Like a grown woman getting a boob job is comparable to imposing mutilation on a baby.

So... Here's my question... Just how blunt, serious, adamant, loud, opposing, passionate is it okay to be when trying to talk to people about circumcision? Personally, I think it is deplorable. I don't think it is a topic that I need to mince and be gentle over. But on the other hand I DO want to be gentle. what about a mom that was steam roller by her husband into getting it done? Or the mom that was young and uninformed? *sigh* I tried my very best to be reasonable and factual... I guess the facts just come across as inflammatory. But where do you draw the line between the brutal facts of circumcision and bashing? Or is everyone that has had a son circumcised going to interpret the facts as bashing? I don't know. Poor boys. Makes me want to cry.

I don't use any of those social networking sites, but I have blogged. My opinion is that it's my place, and I can do what I like with it. I wouldn't limit my content. You don't force people to go there. They can do what they want in their space too.

IME, unless they have become pro intact, yes they will view it as bashing.

I am extremely direct and pull no punches. We had this go down on Facebook a few years ago in my group and no one lost any friends over it, but they all now know not to get me started.

As much as a blog may be a space where a certain kind of information may be expected, I guess I feel like if something is posted on a social networking site for everyone to see, that is inviting a certain amount of open conversation about the topic. In this case, I was merely agreeing with the link posted. I feel like the people who posted clear opposition to the information in the link were aware of the open nature of the whole thing. I suppose not.

I think I am just going to stick with my point. I don't think I am wrong. And I suppose if these ladies get all riled up, maybe they won't be as apt to forget it so quickly. Maybe they will remember in the event they have another son. Maybe it will stick with them and they might someday change their mind.

Galatea... Tell me about it. I have a lot of counter-culture(if that term fits) beliefs in a variety of topics that I don't typically hesitate to get informative about. Shame though, that on a matter so serious people would rather just not go there than work though the tough points and come out the other side better for it.

LOL I have been known to tell people, you really don't want to discuss that with me on certain issues. I don't pull any punches either.

I think it is important to be direct. Sometimes just seeing that the issue IS a big deal is enough to make people think twice. I know that I had no idea that not circumcising was an option until I discovered a circ debate board... just knowing that there was a debate made me research it and saved my first son.

If other people were talking about it in those terms, I would be extremely blunt. I would never initiate the discussion out of the blue, but if people are saying ignorant and insulting things then they can stand to hear blunt talk from the other side.

The things that they were saying were insulting towards those with intact anatomy or those who chose to leave their sons with all their parts. They can't expect to be insulting like that and not get anything back.

JMHO.
