games for 4yr old

Thread Starter
My son turns 4 in a month and I'd like to recommend some board games or other games as gifts to family members.
His favourite game is a memory game. What's a favourite at your house?

Uno!
Slap Jack
Yahtzee (with a little help, and sometimes we change up the rules a bit)
Cootie Bug

There's a game that I've not actually seen, but my midwife highly recommended, called "Wildcraft." It's a cooperative game designed to teach children about herbs and their usages. She said her 4yo granddaughter loved it. There are other cooperative games, too.

Oh! And Dominoes.

And I haven't tried it yet, but I'll bet Quirkle would be a big hit. Maybe with slightly changed rules there, too. Or maybe just use fewer pieces?

We play the Eric Carle game "Brown Bear Brown Bear" (got it at Target) with my DD (4) and DS (2). It is a little over DS's head, but DD gets quite into it and likes to play it over and over.

Curious George Discovery Beach Game! (look it up...a really neat twist on a memory game complete with "sand" and hiding objects that you must remember where they are hiding in the sand! A spin that lands on a wave mixes it all up-so fun! We all love it! Not messy---everything is contained....

Uno. We have the Handy Manny edition.

Hullaballo- not a board game.....rather an action type game similar to twister

Not sure if he would be to young, but we LOVE Trouble! I mean, we seriously play about 10 games a day, but my son is 5.5. We also like Secret Door, by Family Pastimes (It's a cooperative game). MY DS loves Sequence for Kids too, and I like it as well!

We enjoy some less common games:

Monza
Kayanak
Highly Suspect
Gulo Gulo

(The first three are by a German company called "Haba" and sometimes not as easy to find.)

And some more common ones:
Guess How
Connect Four
Trouble

Have fun!

Candyland is a must have, of course! My 4yo loves Dr Suess's Super Stretchy ABC game. Adults will enjoy playing it a little bit less; it's a cute game but really not designed for tall people.

We like memory, candy land, hi-ho cherry oh, socken zocken. We've recently added Uno to the mix, but we play it open rather than hidden cards.

Some of my childhood faves were barrel-o-monkeys and pick-up-stix, and I had a giant checker game with a rug for a board. Looking forward to playing those with my little one(s)!

We have a cooperative game by Family Pastimes called "Max" that DS loves. We have candyland and memory as well, but Max is his favorite. Mine too!

My kids (3 and 5), but particularly my 5-year-old, LOVE games. Here are some of their favorites:

Kids of Carcassonne
Tier Auf Tier
Socken Zocken
Trouble
Guess Who
Chess (the 5-year-old; we haven't taught the 3-year-old)
Blokus
Ker-plunk

A current favorite with them is a card game called Sleeping Queens.
And their grandparents brought Uno Moo with them when they visited last weekend. The kids seemed to really like it, but I didn't play with them, so I don't really know anything about it--except that they loved it.

Of those that I listed, my 3-and-5-year-olds can set up and play all but Chess independently (I should probably say, my 5-year-old can set them up and lead my 3-year-old through them).
