Possible MMR reaction?

Hi All,

My 3 yr old DS has been on a very delayed and selective vax schedule since birth. So far he has had HiB, Prevnar, DTaP and one HepB. He did not have any problems with any of those.

Last Wednesday(4 days ago) he got his first MMR. No problems at all after the shot, except for a sore arm for a few hours, but then today was a disaster. He had aches and pains everywhere, and was so miserable I didn't know what to do with him. Pains in his legs, feet, his mouth hurt, his head hurt, his teeth hurt, his stomach hurt, and most alarmingly, his neck hurt. By the end of the day he could barely walk. His temp is around 99.9. I gave him some tylenol and put him to bed, and now he is sleeping, but then I sat down and re-read my vaccine books, and got worried. It talks about meningitis as a possible side-effect, and also nerve and brain damage.

His symptoms remind me of the flu - body aches, lack of energy, but he doesn't really have a fever so it couldn't be that.

Of course, it is Saturday night and tomorrow is Sunday. Should I call the doctor tomorrow? I know they won't take me seriously - I expressed my concerns to the ped on Wednesday b/c he has many food allergies and chemical sensitivities, and she just said - 'I'm more worried about what could happen to him if he doesn't get the shot'.

Is there any point in calling the doc and taking him in tomorrow if he's no better? I'm guessing there is probably nothing they can do?

Anyone had any similar experiences?

thank you,

Rachel - worried mom...

REGARDLESS of the vac ,with a child feeling like this (barely walking etc) I would call now, your Dr should have an answering service and say you want a call back NOW

They definitely should know about it, regardless of whether or not they feel it is related to the MMR or not, or whether they agree or disagree with you on that. Put a call in and it will be documented on his chart. You may be glad you did in the future. I don't know how serious this is or not, but I'd be calling if it were me (paranoid 1st time parent that I am!) and see what they say. You want to go by how he feels more than the temperature reading. Because if this IS related to the MMR, you probably want to avoid the 2nd one. Share your concerns with your dr and they should document this; let us know what they say & how he is doing tomorrow.

Thanks everyone for your concern.

I shouldn't have said he 'could barely walk'. Truth is he didn't want to walk, but technically he could. I didn't mean to make it sound worse than it was. It was like he just had no energy.

Saturday night he slept till about 2 and then woke up crying and groaning and complaining of all the same things again. Finally fell asleep around 4am and slept till morning. Sunday morning he seemed much better - no more aches and pains. However, that's when the diarrhea started... he's now had terrible diarrhea and stomach pain since then. His older brother had a 24 hr diarrhea/vomiting last Thursday, so now I think this must be the same virus, and not necessarily caused by the vaccine. It didn't hit me until Sunday when the diarrhea started that it must be the same thing. It's amazing how bugs affect kids differently - my 7 yr old was only sick for a matter of hours, and my little one has been sick for 3 days!

Thanks again everyone for your comments.

I hope your son feels better soon. It's crazy how the same virus can affect different people. We got the flu last year. My ds felt a little under the weather for part of Saturday afternoon, but was up playing most of the time. That was it. I, however, felt like I was run over by a truck and spent all of Saturday through Tuesday on the couch. Wednesday, I started to feel a little more human and was able to eat half a sandwich.

Are you giving probiotics? In light of the fact he's having diarrhea and esp. since a recent MMR, I'd be doing a lot of probiotics asap and/or seeing a naturopath for additional advice. Vit A & C a previous poster mentioned are good too.
