Can we deduct HS expenses?

The title pretty much says it. My husband is curious to know if we can claim a deduction on our taxes for curriculum/materials that we use for HSing?

What country do you live in?

Depending on the laws in your area, which law do you follow to homeschool?

Pretty much everywhere, the answer is no, though, and it's a good thing, because it means the government has less to say about how you homeschool and we all end up with far greater freedoms.

As far as I know, NO. I dont even consider the option for the reasons mentioned above. I like my freedoms, and in my state there are no reporting requirements etc. I don't want anyone (govt) sticking their nose in my business.

If you are in the states, Minnesota allows for some deductions. I think there may be a few other states that do, too. We don't live in any of those states, unfortunately.

Thanks all. We're in CA. I plan to file an R-4 and go the private school route.

I think it stinks that in the states you don't get the option of deducting SOME of the expenses. Just last year, our govt introduced an education tax program where ALL parents of school children, public, private or home educated, can claim half of any education expenses (up to 750 per student) on their taxes

Since they are already in our business a bit, I'm happy to take back some of the cash I spend to educate my own children
