Is anyone else supremely annoyed everytime they see an formula Ad on TV......I just get this pit in my stomach and think how against the code it is. I know the us JUST EGNORES the code but I still like it and want to be spared from thease things!

Not so much as against the Code, but have you noticed how mom is always calm, cool, and together and the baby is all cooing and happy? Great subliminal message to a new mom just trying to get the hang of breastfeeding...and having a time of it.

I don't think I've ever seen a formula ad on TV. I guess NFL/MLB viewers aren't the target audience.

I lived in the U. S. from 1999 to 2004 and watched a program on pregnancy and birth a lot - if I remember it right it was "A Baby Story" on TLC. I had two homebirths while we lived there, so I was interested in that kind of program. I found it quite remarkable that I got to watch so many mothers bottlefeed their babies yet the closest they came to breastfeeding while I was watching was a father mixing pumped breastmilk with formula. There were formula commercials before, during, and after the program. Go figure.

There are two that really bug me right now...

One being with a pediatrician saying that she tells her patients to be picky when they choose an infant formula and checks off three things it should have (all of which were found in breastmilk before they were artificially added to formula).

And the other is the Gerber Good Start (used to be Nestle) that talks about how a baby's first 5 years of nutrition are crucial to their lifelong health. I think every time I see that commercial, "and that is exactly why I've never bought any of your products."

Let's bring this around to a Lactivism topic, please, rather than just venting, as per the forum guidelines. Thanks, mamas, and PM me with any questions or concerns.

annettemarie, I can see your point.
Still, the original post is already more of a vent than a call to action. Unless we all decide right here and now to write a joint letter to all the companies airing on U. S. tv?

Well, that's an idea. Or we can talk about how the commercials add to an anti-breastfeeding culture.
