Help with chronic hives.

Hi Everyone,

I need your help! I have been having hives almost everyday since October. I finally went to the doctor a couple of months ago, and she sent me to an allergist. The allergist currently has me on zyrtec and pepsid twice a day, and atarax as needed. The problem is, is that it's not working. I've been on prednisone too, and it works, but the affects of it only work while I'm taking it, they don't continue once I'm finished. ANd I hate it, it makes me feel funny, and it makes me eat like a pig. My hives seem to, also, be developing a tolerance for the meds I'm on, to the point where, the last couple of days, the hives seem to barely respond to my recommended dose, I usually have to take more zyrtec and atarax them I'm technically prescribed, which my doc. said is ok to do if I need to. Part of the problem is too, that the hives will respond well to an increase in medication, but only for a while, and then I have to increase again, and it seems the increase affects are lasting a shorter and shorter amount of time, so I have increase more and more often. So, what we are doing isn't sustainable.

What I'm really freaked out about, is that the next line of defense to try to get rid of these hives is taking a med for transplant patients for 3 months, which has tons of negative side affects, and I would have to have bloodwork done every other week to check my liver, among other things. I DO NOT WANT TO DO THIS!!!

I really want to go to a naturopathic doc. in my area, but I can't afford it. I have a feeling she could really help me.

I should also say is that I don't see any patterns related to my hives and food. I've never had ANY food allergies, my entire life, I'm 29. So, I don't know if an elimination diet would help, but I'm open to it if anyone thinks it might help.

I'm wondering if anyone else has had any success treating hives like these, and how did you do it?

I would try to get allergy testing done. I just posted in the general health forum about my hives. Mine aren't as bad as yours, but they were just over a year ago. I took steroids for 7 weeks finally to get rid of them. Now they're coming back.

Anyhow, long story short, I had allergy testing done-the scratch test on my back-and it came back most positive for BASIL. I have grown and hand-picked basil for years. I've eaten fresh bruschetta, pasta w/sauce, etc. I honestly could not believe it!! So don't rule out food allergies-I was 35 when mine cropped up. I'm also mildly allergic to chocolate, wheat, hops, and a couple kinds of fish.

If you have insurance, check into an allergist. Good luck!

I didn't have any allergies until my mid-20's. I ate a mango and got hives and swelling that sent me to the ER! That was my only food allergy...until now. I have a rash speading to various places on my body that seems to be related to food. Either that or a new deodorant I tried.
I also developed sensitivities to something in hair care products in my mid 20's. So allergies can totally just pop up!

I'd try an elimination diet for a short time, and see what happens. At least then you'll know. Hopefully you figure it out soon!
