Excrutiating pain....need liquid/very soft foods to eat...

I'm in so much pain from my jaw. I'm about ready to break down and go to emerg and get some pain meds. Tylonol is doing nothing, IBprophen is doing nothing....I do have a percoset leftover from a surgery last year but it would knock me out and I'm home along with the kids.

Today I had yogurt and blueberries for breakfast that I was just able to swallow, lunch was tomato soup. I'm so hungry. I have a hard time drinking from a cup because I have to push my lower jaw outwards. I can only drink fluids if I can put them in a water bottle and squirt it into the back of my throat. I get an upset stomach from too much dairy. For dinner I'm making chicken noodle soup and I'm just going to puree some for myself.

Any suggestions on other foods to try?

Hummus would be good.........it's soft but full of protein. Or eggs....scrambled or boiled.

What would I eat the hummus with though? Just plain? I can barely stomach hummus with crackers....but at this point I am so hungry. Eggs, good idea. I can scramble them and just swallow.

I ended up making a thicker chicken noodle soup and mashed potatoes. I cut up the chicken noodle soup pieces super small and ate it that way. No chewing required and settled my stomach.

Oh, I remember those hungries. And the complete lack of flavor bland Ensure type drinks offer. I've been on post jaw surgery diets for a total of 12 weeks during my adult life.

Just keep adding extra fat and protein foods to your blender soups till you feel satisfied.

My fave "soup" was a chopped onion carmelized in a lot of butter for a half hour or so mixed with mashed potatoes and a little water, pureed and diluted into a soup.

I also recommend a green smoothie. (you can google recipes)

They are dairy free.

My suggestion for a higher-fat/calorie one: Take an avocado, some kind of sweet fruit like a can of pineapple or banana, a handful of spinach, some ice, puree it. Puree a raw egg or two with it if you want to. You can also try adding some nut butter if you are ok.

Another thing I did was puree a Thai coconut curry soup (my grocery store has some good ones canned, or try takeout, just to get it fast). Maybe add a little extra cooked chicken or veg.

You can puree cooked chili and dilute it with tomato soup.

do you have an immersion blender? you can make anything soft and chew-free with one of those.
If not, how about potato soup? with or without broccoli, in a blender or processor, nutritious and smooth.. i know even feeling my worst i can always stomach a potato.

You could poach an egg in the chicken noodle soup (sort of like egg drop soup) and then puree....

Adding hemp protein powder (or another tpye of protein powder that you like) to green and/or fruit smoothies might make them more substantial.

Can you sub nut milks, coconut milk or hemp milk for dairy for now? If not, thinning stuff with juice or stock for added flavor vs. water when you puree.

I can't imagine you feel much like cooking right now, but once you're feeling a bit better or if someone can cook for you...

Other soups ideas...a butternut, lentil curry soup, pureed (I make it with chicken stock & am fond of this recipe)

Greek Avgolemono soup -- basicly chicken stock, several eggs yolks, rice and lemon. Very smooth and creamy without dairy. If you haven't made it before, it's very easy to make.

Sweet potato peanut soup.

Potato soup...I definitely 2nd (or 3rd) this idea -- very filling.

Nut butter-banana smoothie

Oatmeal pureed with some kind of milk sub to make it thin enough, and almonds for protein.

Feel better!

Thanks for the ideas everyone.

I'm still just making bland foods because I'm so nauseated....and today I've been flying high as a kite from the muscle relaxants (I'm sensitive to meds). But I'm going to whip up a smoothie for breakfast and some soups for lunch and dinners.
