is a nearly 8 y o regularly staining undies unusual?

I just have to ask since my google search showed up nothing and I would really like to know for my own peace of mind....

is this common....or have I not taught dd to properly wipe?

several times a week dd's undies will have brown steaks varying in quantity, only a few times has there been actual poop....

so, is it common / "normal" for kids to have funky undies many times a week?

DD has a bm daily on a usual pattern, she has been constipated twice in her life so there doesn't seem to be a problem there....

thank you for reading my post and especially for answering so I can get some input and put this to rest in my mind!

She may just not be wiping well. Kids sometimes get in a hurry and just kind of give a token swipe.

Maybe you can ask her to be more throrough.

My 7 yr. old doesn't have poo streaks in his undies, and neither does my 4 yr. old. Maybe you could buy flushable wipes so she can get cleaner?

My dd used to have that problem when she was much younger. I talked to her about the wiping really well and how to tell when she had done that so she wouldn't have the streaks.

YES!

My almost NINE year old. Well, not almost, but still he's over 8. Anyway, he was still having 'staining' issues a few months ago and I called him to the washer, and said "I'm not washing these, you HAVE to wipe better." (it was particularly bad) and made him toss the undies, haven't seen any streaks since.

Oh, and my dd, who is 4 and a half isn't even fully potty learned, so, don't feel bad about a few streaks in your kids drawers. While not every kid does, it doesn't mean you're doing a poor job, some kids just need reminders.

A cloth diaper trick to get/keep out that type of staining, is to do a full cycle on cold, with no soap, then a full cycle with soap on hot. I have my just now 5yo toss hers in the diaper pail just so that they'll get that treatment...

If you'd like to keep them looking cleaner while you get it worked out, maybe you could wash them separately for a while...

my dd does this, or used to until I showed her the underwear and said that it was really gross and high time she did a better job of wiping .

I used to have this problem with DSD...it took a long time for her to finally start wiping herself better! I think she was 8 or 9 before she finally got it.

Yes! My 7 year old has this problem from time to time. It used to be much more frequent and it was so gross! I think his arms are just too short or something. We've talked to him about it and showed him the proper way to do it. I think he just struggles with it when the poo's not really, really solid. (TMI!) It's gotten so much better now that when it does happen, I don't make a big deal of it because I know he's doing the best he can.

Don't blame yourself mama! I think this is really common. My dd doesn't usually get stains or streaks, but I've heard complaints from some of my IRL friends that their kids have trouble wiping clean after a BM. Maybe they don't bother to take the time to make more than a cursory wipe and maybe they don't notice the difference in how it feels (I know I would start to feel irritated and rash-y if I didn't wipe thoroughly!). I like a pp's idea of buying some wet-wipes to help her be able to get clean more easily. (Heck, I use them myself sometimes!).

Some poos are really messy and take quite a bit of wiping! Especially for a kid I’ll second (or third?) the suggestion for flushable wipes. My DS has been using them for quite some time and hasn’t had any skids since! I also use them to finish up wiping. I just don’t feel like regular TP gets me as clean as I’d like, you know? TMI, sorry

My nine year old still does it.

my almost 8 year old does too.

she knows how to do it, she has had wipes and the whole shebang. however in her case there are two things.

1. her arms dont reallly reach that well. esp. since she has her babyfat still.

2. perfectionist.

i know she can do it. at her dad's place she has flushable wipes in the beginning, now its a bidet. but she doesnt feel confident like she didnt do a good job.
