Real Contractions.....how are they different?

Okay, I know what braxton hicks feel like (had them since 14 weeks!) and I know prodromal labor for the past 5 weeks. maybe Im just SUPER paranoid but Im truly paranoid about recognizing the real thing ... my midwife says to look for the back pain that precedes a contraction of which I'm not getting, but the thing is I really do NOT remember having any back pain at all with my son......and I have read that some women do not experience the back pain with contractions...so I'm just wondering how many of you have ever had any contractions WITHOUT backpain.....
or is there anyone out there that had so much prodromol labor beforehand that it was hard to tell the difference???????

BH for me are usually painless tightening (but not everyone experiences them that way). In the days leading up to labor this time, my ctx were somewhere on the continuum between BH and "real" labor contractions. They were more attention getting, and I could feel them sort of pulling in my cervix. I don't remember much in my back.

With my oldest, my ctx were in my back in the weeks leading up to labor, and then in actual labor, they were totally in the front and more menstrual crampy/tightening sensations. I think maybe DS was posterior and then shifted before actual labor started, because the ones in the weeks leading up to labor were more uncomfy than my ctx in active labor. It was obvious to me they were labor ctx though as I woke up, water broke, and contractions were immediately about 5 mins apart. we had a 40 minute drive to the hospital for his birth and it wasn't even bad. I remember encouraging DH to stop for drive through breakfast for himself as he hadn't eaten yet that morning and he gets shaky when he doesn't eat.

With my 2nd DC, my ctx were more the classic start in the back, wrap around to the front kind of contractions, and sort of general crampiness. But they were pretty painless for 95% of my labor. The only time they got really intense was on the way to the birth center in the car. Before and after, I wasn't even sure I was in active labor (other than them being in a regular pattern, they weren't overwhelmingly intense at all), and I was 10 cm dilated by the time I showed up to the birth center. Membranes were still intact so I hung out waiting to feel pushy.

This time around my contractions built up to something between BH and actual active labor contractions in the 2-3 days beforehand. Nothing crazy, but I could feel more pulling in my cervix and they seemed a little longer/stronger?. I woke up at 3 am (was fine all night before that) to what felt like one HUGE contraction...I swear it felt like it was 2 mins long. They were immediately about 2-3 mins apart, sometimes 4. But they were very strong (stronger than with my previous two.). I don't remember feeling them in my back though. DS was born about 5 hrs later.

I've had 3 different experiences. For me, the back thing was *not* really true. I've also been able to walk/talk through contractions with each of my labors up until the very, very, very end. After my experience with my first child, i've had to remind my other care providers that walking/talking through contractions is not a good gauge of where I am at.

Me too. If I waited until this point, this time, my midwife would surely have missed the birth. In fact, I wasn't convinced it was labor until about an hour or so before he was born... and i figured I had a lot left, by that time, though I'd been having contractions that were long enough and getting stronger for *hours* before hand. Glad I called my midwife when I did to just give her a heads up or ask if I should think about them being labor or not so early, though, because it was good to have her here already when things started to get going.

I actually remember making a joke maybe half an hour before he arrived? Not during a contraction, but not typical for transition, either, though maybe I was pre-transition still at that point? I dunno.

With #1 (posterior), I had entirely back labor, no ctx. in the front. They were super strong and painful, and I had a lot of trouble relaxing through my entire labor.

With #2, I had mostly in the front, with twinges in the back. I didn't know how I was going to make it through another long labor, they were so strong. It turned out to be pretty fast (about 5 hours), and all though it was intense, it was much better than #1. Also, I'd had BH for weeks, and I knew when I was in labor, just because the intensity picked up, they became a lot more regular, and continued to lengthen.

#3 was very similar to #2.

#4 was pretty much all in the front. I knew when the real deal started, because I woke up with a dream that I had been kicked in the stomach. The ctx. double and triple peaked throughout my entire labor. Very different than the BH I had experienced.

The thing is , these are sooooooo strong. I need to breathe through them, sometimes I can barely catch my breath, I need to close my eyes and sometimes I do cry out a bit (I have a high tolerance to pain by the way)...sometimes they get as close as 4-6 minutes.....it seems, in reading these, that even real labor varies, so again, I'm nervous......oh, and my water never broke nor did I ever see mucous plug etc. in previous pregnancies until right up to the pushing stage! So I can't even count on those as helping me make a determination....if only the hospital wasn't 35 minutes away..........

I've had days of this too...wondering if it's the real thing. I keep figuring that it will get even stronger and then I won't be in doubt. Mine will even get to two mins apart for an hour or so and then change. Also at some point changing position makes a difference too.

But I am having loss of mucus for days...My midwife at this point believes that I'll probably go quickly once I do because my body has been prepping for so long. I was 4cm on Wed...so these contractions/BH are doing something.

I keep wondering why my body is doing this and I wonder if the baby's position is making an impact on the drawn out early labor. I read through spinningbabies.com again today and have been making more of an effort to do regular pelvic tilts. I may try the rebozo thing later too.

I hope we get to meet these babies soon and that you'll have an recognizable sign!

This is ridiculous and really depriving me of sanity....
last night they began again with ligament pain and nerve pain down my legs...avg of 8-10 minutes apart very very strong for about 3 and a half hours, regardless of position, though walking was slightly less intense..... irregular for about an hour or so....then....went to bed and actually fell asleep....for maybe an hour...woke up to two really intense ones...then the intensity tapered off for about an hour and a half but were between 3 to 3 and a half minutes! My midwife suggested taking a bath to see if they would calm before traveling 35 minutes to get checked....in the bath the contractions were no more than 3 minutes and more intense....but I felt really really tired so when I got out I asked dh if I should lay down for just a bit, he agreed (I'd only had about an hour of sleep and this was at about 4 in the morning)...I actually DID fall asleep.....only to wake up less than an hour later with intense contractions 4 min apart for 20 minutes and then got irregular again though remained strong for about an hour before tapering off and got totally irregular again....I finally thought maybe I could lay down around 9 am this morning and did sleep but woke up to a contraction every 5-8 minutes......not mild, but not intense.....had one intense one since I've been up for the past 30 min, and a few less intense......
my stomach aches from intestinal cramping in between....had a few bms that were somewhat loose....no extra mucus, no water, no bloody show.....I'm going nuts...I can't do this....how long will this last of forever contractions that don't seem to be leading anywhere????
