Go Kara Go!

I had some slip-ups this month, but overall I'm doing fine. So I'm right there with you for the hard-core last week. I can wait until May 1st to buy anything, right? Be strong!

Okay, minor drive-thru slip-up today. We're g.r.a.d.u.a.l.l.y. becoming a vegetarian family up here and some days my kids just BEG me for fast food...so when they've had a really good meatless week, I cave and get them crappy fast food. (and who am I kidding? I'm addicted to it too)

But I'm ignoring that and plowing on...

I need the next seven days to be no-spend days so I can meet my goal for the month. I'm buckling down, locking up that wallet and really going for it. It will be a challenge because next week is spring break.

We have a lot of free stuff on our calendar, so if I can just hold firm and stick to what we have planned, we can make it.

1.
2. ordered our homeschool curriculum for next year. I'm putting this here preemptively to encourage me to NOT SPEND when I go out later
3. $50 bread, eggs for dying, and the last of the Easter baskets things at WalMart
4.
5.
6. ordered the last of the things I need for DS1's dinosaur party, was able to stay under budget AND found an online coupon code to save on shipping, also ordered our sunblock/ bug spray for the year~ unprepared for how DS1's soccer practice being at 5:30pm would affect us and got McD's for dinner.
7.
8. ordered our math curriculum for next year, excited to get started planning next year's schooling
9. $15 on quick grocery trip
10. $$ at Costco, major grocery shop, overspent a bit on some snacks
11. $$ at party store. I only needed 1 thing, invitations, but of course the WHOLE family was w/ me, and DH saw a bunch of stuff he thought would be *great* for DS1's party : So we spent more than I planned on things I don't think we really needed
12.

15.
16.
17.
18.
19.
20.
21.
22. McDonald's for lunch and pizza delivery for dinner (all within budget). We were out all day, stopped by my mom's and spent WAY too much time there.
23.
24. DS1's birthday party. Bought bags of sand for the "dino dig" at Home Depot, budgeted for.
25. DH got a haircut. Normally I cut his hair, but I was so tired from the party and he couldn't wait. Didn't really have the haircut budgeted for.
26. Putting this all here preemptively. We're not leaving the house at all and I'll be spending the day returning the house to pre-party conditions.
wow, what a great thread!
I'm hoping to join the May thread, but thought I'd jump in here and post now!

Who I am: Mom of 4 (soon to be 5) and fulltime out of the house worker.

My situation: I currently work full time and I'm due in December. We have very little debt, about $600 worth of cc that will be paid off in the next 3 months, and my goals are to save $ for vacation in July and to save $ for emergency fund and just to be more frugal and less instant gratification. We also would like to be able to afford to buy a house within a year from right now.
We rent, but we own both our cars outright. We don't have a lot of out-go, which is why I'm here. I need to figure out where, exactly, our money goes each month and why it seems impossible for us to save even 5% of our paychecks. We're never going to build up a emergency fund if we can't figure out where the money's going.

So, I'm going to try the "no-spend" idea and see if that helps us!
I really believe we should and can be saving at least 10% of our checks, but somehow we're not doing that right now. I think we're wasting too much on food that we don't eat all of, or throw out. We were doing meal planning, but we've slacked off on that and we need to start that again. Also, since we have a larger family, we need to concentrate on buying more bulk items when we can, and saving there.

Thanks for this thread! - Jen
for May... I'm trying to think of other things we can cut back on... we already do not eat out... maybe once or twice a month.... but not as a regular habit. We have cable, which I find abhorrently expensive, but DH will NOT give that up. We have cell phones, which are indispensible now, as we have 4 kids and they all have activities at different times, and we keep in constant contact. It's good for our relationship too... we do seem to spend a lot on cleaning products... I hate spending $5 or more on sponges all the time, and I know we could be making laundry soap instead of buying it, it would be literally 1/5th the cost to make my own 5gal bucket... anyone else done this?

We have a cat and a hamster... food for them is minimal... less than $5 per month for both of them..... litter is about $12-$14 per month? because I do use a more expensive brand, since it smells wonderfully and works realllly well and is not dusty or gritty.

I think before I can figure out where to cut back, I need to know where I'm spending.....

ANyone else find suprises when they really started looking at their budget and where their money was really going?
- Jen
