we took DS off gluten about 10 days ago due to lower GI issues. he's been doing great and we were letting him have the occasional food with gluten until i heard back from his GI doctor(which i did today and no more gluten from now on). he had some pizza on Friday night with his friends. today i get a note from school saying that he was complaining of chest pain and couldn't finish his school work. when i questioned him a bit more is sounds like reflux. pain in the middle of the chest and it was right after lunch. i don't think it could be the pizza from Friday night. i've been super vigilant at home and have removed all sources of cross-contamination. i even bought him a new lunch box. the only thing that was different today was a yogurt tube. he had one yesterday with no complaints. do you think it could be the yogurt tube? maybe now that his lower stomach isn't bothering him he feels the pain in his chest? anyone have any insight into this?

If you're not already keeping a food journal for him, you might want to start now (or he could do it himself, if he's old enough). Has he had problems with dairy before? It could be the yogurt. But anything he ate at lunchtime could be suspect. Not sure how old he is, or what the situation is in the school room, but it is possible that he set his food down on an unwashed table and got cross-contamination.

i know, the food journal is key. i usually get about three days in and then lose steam. i used to think it was dairy that was giving him stomach troubles but after several months of being dairy free his issues got worse. we took him off gluten and i'm letting him have small amounts of dairy. i know gluten and dairy issues can often go hand in hand. i'll probably pull the yogurt from his diet.
from what i understand the kids from each class are responsible for wiping off their table after their class is done. DS is under strict orders not to share food or take someone else's food. cross contamination is a possibility i suppose.

I read somewhere about the analogy that if you have a bunch of rocks in your shoe, and you take one out, it's still going to be uncomfortable... that's the relation to multiple food intolerances. If you only take one out at a time, and there's several, then it's not going to get that much better. Maybe you want to take dairy and gluten out at the same time. The food journal is also key, because a lot of people substitute something else (for instance, soy for dairy) and it's another common one that often is a problem.
