self-cleaning oven questions

My oven is an relatively new Kenmore Elite electric oven with a convection feature (like 3 years old?). I've only used the self-cleaning feature on it once and it gave me a really bad headache. I've since noticed that I get headaches any time I use the oven on really high heat (like 450 to bake bread or something). So, I have a couple of questions:

First, does anyone else have this headache experience with their oven? Should I be weirded out?

Second, can I run the self-cleaning module on my oven when I'm not at home, to try to stay away from the headache, or is that courting disaster?

I always try to run it when I'm not home. Just turn on a fan before you go. The smell from it is too much for me to stand while i'm home.

And new ovens usually come with a coating inside that needs to be burned off, that's probably what's causing the headache. Another self-cleaning cycle or two should take care of it.
