1st b-day ideas for a babe still on purees?

I've seen my own 1st birthday photos and there's the cake with the big #1 on it. Not sure if I was capable of eating it or if it was just for my parents and the photo ops.

That said, my LO will be 1 in a month and I want to plan ahead to do something for his birthday, but not sure what to do for a "cake".

I want something healthy, so don't want to do something with sugary icing on it. Should I go ahead with a cupcake (no frosting) and let him mash it with his fingers or are there other suggestions?

What do you do for a baby's birthday when they haven't mastered solids yet?

He vomited when he put a puff in his mouth, so I can't imagine cake would go much better.

There are loads of healthy cake recipes on the internet. For DS I made a sugar free carrot cake. It was sweetened with apple juice and was really yummy. I made frosting with cream cheese, agar agar and apple juice too.

If you think he'll vomit though I would just give him something he likes like apple sauce and have the cake for everyone else. Who wants to vomit at their party?

If you wanted to make something special, you could try something like this Strawberry Cream recipe. There's 1/3 cup sugar in 8 portions, so it's pretty healthy, and I can attest that it is both delicious and easy to make. I think if you cooled it in a cupcake tin it would keep its shape well enough to be a 'cake.'

We gave DD1 watermelon in a cupcake wrapper topped with yogurt. It was easy, food she was already eating and enjoyed, healthy, and sufficiently messy and cake like.

I went to a bday party a while back where the birthday girl had a big bowl of guacamole (really just mushed avo but really mushed) and she had a BLAST with it and I thought it was just brilliant.

My son still wasn't eating a lot at one, so for family parties I had a "cake" that was just a small hill of crumbled up muffin and a toy truck, so a truck and dirt. He enjoyed playing with it and maybe ate a few pieces. For his actual birthday at home, we stripped him down to diaper and gave him a bowl of yogurt and he loooved it. The yogurt pictures are the pictures we enjoy looking back at the most too for what that is worth.

we did muffins - grainy good stuff and I made greek yogurt "frosting" to go on top. I had friends who had good luck with the first birthday cakes from wholesomebabyfood.com
