I'm trying to find a tutorial on how to make those hair wraps that cover the top on the head like a bandana, but have an elastized bottom that goes under the hair. I've tried to google up but I have no idea what the are called and am not having any luck.

Maybe a snood?
Here's a link for some ideas, both sewn and crochet/knit:
http://www.fmfcorp.com/familyspot/haircover.html
or
http://www.sewmodestclothing.com/snood.shtml

some have elasic at the back and some have the gathered fabric attached to a sized headband...
hope this helps!

I like this tutorial online for a "hair kerchief"-- I hope that helps!

I know exactly what you mean. I bought a cheap ugly one at the $ store, and took it apart for a pattern. Then I made them out of recycled tshirts, handwoven gauzy stuff, and several other fabric scraps I had around.
