So I remember early on there was a thread where many of you were discussing the often received comment "Don't you know what causes that?" (wink, wink, nudge, nudge) in regards to pregnancy. I couldn't believe people would actually say that to a pregnant woman - and I certainly didn't expect to hear it since this is our first, and I'm a lesbian - but somehow, I did.
I babysit two little boys (5 and 3) and we were at the library the other day and I suppose the gentleman watching us interact assumed they were my kids and that I was straight, so when the boys were out of earshot he approached me to make his oh-so-hilarious and original joke: "Don't you know what causes that?" he said, pointing at my belly. I was taken aback, but I answered, "yes, I know exactly what causes it. My lesbian partner and I choose a sample from a sperm bank, we monitor for ovulation, then make a doctor's appointment for artificial insemination, wait two weeks, test to see if it worked, and then nine months later there's a baby."
The poor guy looked like he'd just disappear if he could.
