i use gmd unbleached prefolds and have never ever had a problem ... until i completely forgot about a small bag of wet dipes that i had left in the car ... for two days... while it was hot... ::head desk::

ive tried looking on the internet for ways to get rid of the ammonia smell but there are so many different ways to go ... what do you suggest?

fwiw: i have washed a few times already, boiled one particular diaper that seriously stunk! and did a "quick strip" with dawn. didnt seem to do anything. thanks...

i would try washing them with a tiny bit of bleach.

I would wash with a full amount of Tide (to the "1" line) and rinse, rinse, rinse until there are no suds left. There have been times when that was the only thing that worked for me. If it improves a lot but there is still a mild lingering smell, I'd wash a few more loads like that, but use them in between, kwim?

That's what worked here for ammonia smell.

Vinegar! Vinegar! Dump those nasties in the washing machine with a crapload of vinegar (seriously, 2-3 cups or even a half gallon won't hurt your laundry at all, but 1-2 cups is usually enough) and your usual amount of your normal detergent. If they still smell vinegary when they are done, give them an extra rinse and spin. Ammonia has no chance against the power of vinegar!

On my machine, I have a "sanitary" cycle - and that's what I run when I start having ammonia problems. It uses Extra Hot water, on a longer agitation with my regular dipe detergent, BS and vinegar.

i will try the vinegar suggestion first, thankyou!

i dont have a "sanitary" cycle on my washer, its an old one! but my mom does ... maybe i will head over there and do a wash soon...

if those two dont work, i will have to run out and buy some Tide.... (we make our detergent) ... thanks for that one!

if i have the unbleached prefolds and wash them with bleach, even if its just a little bit, will the color change? does anyone know? i love my tan prefolds
