Molars and latch issues?

I'm trying to figure out why my 2 yo DS's latch is suddenly becoming painful. The other times it was painful for me was during teething, so my only guess is that molars are coming in? The good thing is that I can tell him now that it hurts and that he needs to be gentle, but sometimes after it has hurt for a little bit he pops off and tells me "It doesn't work, Mama!" and asks for the other side.

We only nurse 1-2 times a day now - it's become part of our nightime and occasionally naptime routine, even though he doesn't nurse to sleep any more, just to calm down. It's not terrible, but it is a bit painful.

Any thoughts?

other changes

Hi, I am breastfeeding a 2 y/o and he is also getting new molars. Though I have noticed some latch changes when he is teething, I notice it more after he has used a straw or a sippy cup that requires a different sucking pattern. A few weeks ago I had a lot of pain on one nipple and I realized we had been using a straw for fun for a week straight at dinner. Maybe it is just coincidence because I would think he could differentiate between the two sucking patterns at his age, but it got better after we cut down on the straw use. Another time I had pain we were visiting my Mom who gave him a covered cup with a lid that requires a strong sucking action (at home he drinks from regular cups/no lid). I hope it gets better for you!
