Is it possible to grow potatoes in the city?

Today we picked up some various vegetable seeds to grow in the corner of my grandma's yard, which she lets us use. But what my 5-year old son really wants to try growing is potatoes. I don't know the first thing about growing potatoes. Is it possible to grow them in a container? We do have a patio in behind our house. I don't think there is enough room at my grandma's to start planting potatoes on top of everything else.

Have you considered growing potatoes in trash cans, like this:

You can definitely grow potatoes in a container! A tall rectangle rubbermaid will work also! Just drill holes in it.

Potatoes are so much fun to grow!

If you have old tires laying about, that will work as well instead of a trash can. Just add a tire, add straw and keep it growing and covered. Easy to knock apart for harvesting as well.

Tires sound great except for all the nasty chemicals they leech.

A local person is making and selling these potato planters, apparently you can get 100lbs from each box.

A friend of ours grows potatoes in a giant cloth bag on his balcony every year. It's works the way the boxes do.
