Whenever i check for cm i get period/contraction type pains and my belly goes hard, i also sometimes get some pain in the tops of my legs and my back, has anyone else had this?
also i've got some swelling down there (no soreness, apart from the occasional sharp twinge in my pubic bone) but it's making it difficult to check it's tight to fit just one finger (soz tmi i know but i'm fairly new to the whole checking cm)

That sounds pretty strange to me... not sure how far you're trying to get that finger ;-) but it shouldn't hurt.

A lot of women only check externally.

lol not that far i've only got short fingers i usually just check if anything goes on the tissue but i figured it would be better to check what was going on inside cos not getting anything on tissue although i don't think i'll be doing it again because it's uncomfortable.

hmm... it should not hurt at all to touch your cervix, and it is not expected to be hard to get a finger inside to reach it, especially not on someone who has birthed several kids- i would think if you cant get a finger in, dtd or a speculum exam would be impossible. maybe you should check this with a health care provider?
