solids - how much to eat?

Just when I get comfortable with milk intake.... now we've introduced solids and I have NO CLUE how much he should be eating. He's on formula now, which we've cut back on just a teeny bit because of eating 3x a day.

Because my DS has zero self-regulation, I swear he'd just eat and eat til he threw up. He'll eat 1/2 an acorn squash in one sitting, and he's only 6.5 months old.

The cereal containers (rice/oatmeal, etc) say give a few tbsp.
So for bkfst, I give 4 tbsp cereal with water. Plus a few tbsp of organic apple sauce. And normally part of a banana or some other mashed veggie.
And that's breakfast.
We do this 3 x a day, about the same amount, some cereal, some veggie and maybe part of what I'm eating if he looks interested.

This seems like a lot!!! But, he takes it, LOVES it, and like I said, always wants more, is upset when I take the bowl away.
And he doesn't seem to be gaining weight.

How much do your LO's eat?

Ok, this probably is not going to be very helpful to you, but my kid eats however much he wants. I think that there probably is a regulation mechinisim there, even if I do not fully understand it. I also know that I am really reluctant to make food a power struggle.

We started feeding solids at 6 months...my LO just turned 9 months yesterday. Today he ate:

About a quarter of an egg/cheese/onion/redbellpepper omelette for breakfast.
Skipped lunch (bad mommy!)
A quarter cup of rice/lentil with about three large-ish broccoli spears. I don't know how much of this actually made it into his mouth though. There was quite a bit on his lap.

Yesterday:

Breakfast was some cheerios. Tried to give yogurt but he's not a huge fan.
Lunch: Black beans and rice with avocado and sour cream. And cheese. Again probably an eighth to quarter cup total.
Dinner: We had homemade pizza and the crust was too hard for him, so I mixed chunks of avocado and mozz cheese with the pizza sauce and gave that to him (he loooooved it!)

On top of this I still breastfeed on demand. He's a pretty tall kid for his age, and I think he is in the middle of a growth spurt to boot so this may be more than your average kid eats. I dunno...he's the only one I've ever fed.

That's actually a lot of food for a 6 mo. You're giving him almost 1/2 a c of food per meal - that's roughly equivalent to 2 jars of baby food per meal (6 jars a day!), on top of how much formula? At this point in time, formula should still be making up the lion's share of his diet, he needs the fat and protein, which he is not getting from the solids... none of what you listed contains fat or protein, which are crucial to his development.

At 6-7 months I only gave dd one meal per day. At about 9 m we went to 2 meals and at 12 months three meals a day. The majority of the calories for that year should be from the formula.
